Arsenal could teach wasteful Liverpool a thing or two
IF anyone was wondering why Arsenal are ten points clear of Liverpool then their games at the weekend told them all they need to know.
Liverpool went to Man City and played them off the park but only ended up getting a single point because they were let down by their finishing.
Arsenal didn't play well at all against Everton but still managed to score four goals and came away with a vital win.
Where they were clinical in front of goal and ruthless when chances came their way, Liverpool weren't and that's the big difference between the two sides at the moment.
It's really frustrating because that was the only element of Liverpool's play that let them down at Eastlands.
They were superior in every department and the fact that City, who are unbeaten at home in the league, were forced to defend for pretty much the entire game shows how well Liverpool played.
But I've spoken before about the need for Liverpool to become more ruthless and finish teams off when they have the chance to do so and it was this failing that let them down at City.
Fernando Torres had a rare off day in front of goal but that's understandable because no forward can do it every single game no matter how good they are.
He has been fantastic for Liverpool this season so he can't be criticised for missing a couple of chances but the disappointing thing for me is that not enough players are chipping in with goals.
If you look at their record so far this season, Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch and Andriy Voronin have only scored six goals between them in the league.
They have all contributed to the team in other ways but if they could just take a bit of the pressure off Torres when it comes to goal scoring it would be a big benefit to Liverpool.
It's always better if the goals are shared around and it is up to the other players to do their bit when the likes of Torres and Steven Gerrard don't score.
Looking at the table, ten points does seem a big gap but Liverpool have a game in hand and I get the feeling that Arsenal are not the team to beat anyway.
I honestly think that whoever finishes above Man United this year will be champions so it is them, and not Arsenal, who have to be Liverpool's target.
But if they are to stand any chance of finishing above them then Liverpool are going to have to develop a ruthless streak.
