You only get what you pay for in this world. Or do you...

SO the first arrival of the close season is Swiss full-back Philipp Degen. (Read here)
Not exactly the kind of signing to get the blood racing through the veins or have Messrs Fergie, Grant or Wenger rummaging through their man-bags (c'mon you just know Grouchy of Govan has a suave little tartan one) for the chequebook in blind panic, is it?
Puts Steven Gerrard's recent comments (Read here) about the need for some serious muscle-flexing, and sharpish, in the transfer market into even sharper focus, one might suggest.
Maybe this is a tad unfair though.
In spite of the somewhat questionable photos of our new acquisition doing the rounds as highlighted by fellow ECHO blogger Luke Traynor some weeks ago (See here), we should all know better than to judge a book by its cover.
Some of our most successful signings in days of yore have come from the bargain basement - Rushie from Chester, Stevie Nicol from Ayr, Keegan from Scunthorpe, the list is endless.
Amidst all the hoopla of Gerard Houllier's first influx of foreign, er, talent, the most maligned before we had seen a ball kicked was good ole Titi Camara, largely on the back of a somewhat lack-lustre performance - and ensuing character-assassination by Barry Davies - during the previous season's UEFA Cup final and he ended up pretty much being the best of the bunch (until criminally jettisoned for Emile Ivanhoe as that season, and CL qualification, evaporated into dust).
So maybe the lack of any real expectation on this latest freebie will help young Herr Degen and enable him to really hit the heights for the Reds.
Mind you, I remember saying the same about Andriy Voronin last summer...

i dont trust free tansfers, look at voronin, he isn't fit to play for everton, so what makes rafa think he is for liverpool? the best signings are the 1-2 Million (jolean Lescott), if rafa wants to win the premiership he needs to start buying top quality players, Dani Alves, Diego, Samuel Eto'o, David Silva Etc.
As a lifelong Liverpool fan, now living in Dortmund for over seven years. I can honestly say ´Degen´when not a load of rubbish, he is definitely not Liverpool class.
So much so, that when the Dortmund fans´I know`found out that he was going to Liverpool, they just fell about laughing.
If we are going to compete for the title, the Yanks will have to dig their hands deeper in to their pockets.
Or better still sell to DIC.
