The jury: What did you make of Liverpool's season overall

By The Jury on May 15, 08 07:32 AM in Fans

Each week, the Liverpool Echo asks a group of fans a question relating to one of the big issues at their club. We've republished their answers here so you can get involved too.

ANDY COLLINSON, Aigburth

VARIOUS warring factions, a middle-aged man trying to perform magic from the sidelines, one shining hope, and an assortment of motley characters on our side who can't quite feel the 'force' yet.

No, not the screenplay for Star Wars, a fair representation of Liverpool's season!

Where can Liverpool go from here though? Crouch, Pennant and Riise all have to be sold quickly if we're to bid any substantial money for new targets. But I think Liverpool should also consider accepting serious offers for the likes of Kuyt and Babel too, simply because Liverpool could buy far more effective attacking players, such as Owen or Henry, who would be far better foils for Torres.

Unsurprisingly the League again easily eluded us. If next season is to be when that bid for the title is actually launched, then it might also be a good time for our manager to consider pursuing a new philosophy too. Controlled, attacking football usually wins. Play it for once Benitez, and the Empire might finally Strike Back!

JOHN CRUCES, Kirkby

SO that's it for another year. The highs have been the impact of Fernando Torres, our Champions League run, plus the permanent signing of Mascherano to add to the young squad that has been built.

The lows have been the draws that cost us any realistic chance of being involved in the title race, a certain own goal and the carry on 'off the park' between the owners.

But we have to learn from this campaign's mistakes. I believe in the benefits of a rotation system but we should get a job done and then make changes. There is no point having fresh legs late on in the season if you are already out of the race.

That said, our squad has definitely improved and will probably improve further in the summer, but so will our rivals.

Therefore, it's important to sort out the ownership mess so Rafa can get his targets in early to prepare for the new season - one, we hope, will see us continue to impress in Europe but, more importantly, have a sustained title challenge.

IAN RICHARDSON, Rock Ferry

I DON'T think I have known a season quite like the one which has just ended.

No we didn't win a trophy, nor did we even reach a cup final, we showed some improvement on the field and we are getting closer to that elusive 19th title which I firmly believe Rafael Benitez will ultimately deliver given time and backing.

Unfortunately all the ups and downs on the field were totally overshadowed by the unprecedented behaviour of the people who own and run our club.

The people who promised the start of work on a new stadium, promised us a new debt free era, promised backing for our manager, but delivered nothing but lies, deceit and the good name of Liverpool Football Club being dragged through the mud. A kick in the teeth for the twelfth man.

Yes we need two or three new signings, full back and attacking midfield the areas needing improvement, but most of all this chaotic ownership situation of our club must be resolved once and for all.

PAUL O'LEARY, Allerton

SIX out of 10 is my overall assessment of Liverpool this season and three players stand out.

Not surprisingly they are Gerrard, Mascherano and player of the season Torres - he embodies everything a great footballer should be.

There have been others who have done well, Carra and Reina in particular. Skrtel looks a great signing and hopefully we will see Agger back early next season.

When you consider all these players make up the spine of our team then it is fairly obvious where Rafa needs to strengthen in the summer. We need at least a full back, winger and another striker. I would love to see Owen back.

Kewell, Riise and Pennant will all be on their way this summer and I am sorry to say I think Crouch will follow them though Rafa will try and convince him to stay unlike the other three.

The drama with the owners has been a massive low point for me, I never imagined Liverpool FC would publicly behave in such a manner. As Gerrard said this week, summer signings will crucial to our success or failure next season.

To be honest it could have been better, we started off fighting for the title but after a few weeks we soon realised our reality. The FA cup was a huge dissapointment nearly going out to a team of no namers, and them finally getting nocked out by Barnsley, and as for the carling cup, well Rafa nocked us out of that playing his 2nd team, he knew we were not gonna win the league so he should have tryed to win a cup. I'm rather pleased with the champions league-another semi final, although a few decisions didnt go our way,Drogba said all week he doesn't dive, and 30 seconds into the 2nd leg he dived. Thrilled with the likes of fernando torres and steven gerrard, mascherano and babel also impressed me, feel a bit sorry for the likes of benayoun crouch alonso and pennant who sometimes found it hard to get 15 minutes nevermind a full game, but its been an alright season overall and we need to really push next season, bring in david villa, sergio aguero or michael owen.
