Why credit crunch could be Anfield's saving grace

So Tom Hicks' latest stadium-building venture in the United States has gone belly-up. (Read here)
Cue lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth no doubt about how this means we're further than away than ever from our all-singing, all-dancing new stadium.
Well pardon me for not donning sackcloth and ashes but I'm made up.
Apart from the fact this may mean Tom the Texan's dream of a golden goose stadium on Stanley Park from which he can keep milking money seems as likely to materialise in the near future as another open-house invite to Glasgow Rangers fans from the city of Manchester, it might just put the whole issue of whether we actually need a new ground back on the agenda.
Yes, we all know that Manchester United make about a gazillion pounds more per home game more than us.
Yes, we know that parts of Anfield are somewhat antiquated and are unable to cope with the demand both for corporate and 'ordinary' supporters.
But are we raising the stakes - whilst simultaneously tossing away our greatest asset - in a game that we can't possibly win?
Some people seem to think a new stadium magically rights all a club's wrongs.
Ask Leicester City or Southampton how their new ground was helping them as they fought it out on the last day of their seasons to avoid the drop to English football's third tier.
Or even Arsenal as they watched their promising season disappear down the plughole, arguably due to a lack of squad strengthening in January, which Arsene Wenger may have been reluctant to do, even though his board reportedly had made money available to him, due to his awareness of his club's need to pay off the millions borrowed to build the shiny, soulless Emirates.
It is futile to try and even compete financially with the gargantuan financial might of lottery winners Chelsea and United - who didn't just embrace the new commerical imperatives that emerged with the advent of the Premier League in 1992 but left their underwear at home on the first date and let their footprints get embedded on the ceiling.
There is no doubt the club needs to market itself better and capitalise more effectively on the resonance the name of Liverpool FC still has around the world of football.
But build a 70,000 seater stadium and the Mancs'll go to 90,000.
Spend £100m a season and they'll spend £200m.
Ferguson's mob won the championship last season - then lashed out around £50m net, the summer's biggest spenders, to improve their squad and won it again.
What we should be doing is making sure the corporate side of the club is operating proportionately as well as it can while ensuring that football side of things is adequately supported and able to function without distractions.
That means ensuring we keep hold of the most precious commodity we have, the sacred patch of turf, bricks and mortar that is still spoken of in hushed tones the world over and has inspired unfathomable feats from those wearing Red whilst turning those trying to stop them into jelly-legged bystanders.
It may well be that the Dubai folk, or whoever end up owning the club, have a new stadium as item numero uno on their agenda, and it can be argued that LFC, and the fabled 'Liverpool Way', ceased to be the second that the Americans walked through the door last February.
There may only be a tiny shard of light left behind that stable door with the horse straining its reins to breaking point as it prepares to bolt, but whilst the club still plays at our Anfield, there remains hope that the brink will be pulled back from.

I agree 100%. Great article
Spot on. There's no reason why Anfield can't be redeveloped.
Although I agree with your article....Am I being naive.....I don't think Big Tex is going anywhere....EVER....You forget that he does own a very big asset in LFC and a certain Spanish player that I do believe Real just offered 50mil for (it wouldn't be popular but, does he care???) - 50mil and a % of LFC would put the first shovel in the ground here in Big D.....on the other hand....MLB and NHL have one advantage over the EPL...owners are held accountable to the LEAGUE if financial difficulties arise (severe) or scandal occurs.....Without $$ from Big Tex & Lil' Canuck LFC will be having another trophyless season...with no $$ coming in,pending interest payments on the clubs' DEBT and the US in a 'economic down turn' as our Prez states ...Rafa will be facing the summer transfer window without funds...while Chelski and Manc spend 100mil each....Oh well theirs always 2010....maybe Chelski and Manc will be distracted by the WC and we can win it!!......Rant over :)
Agreed, I've said this on vaiouse forums and been shot down as people buy into the whole "we MUST have Stanley Park sorted". IMO we need to get it right on the pitch first and foremost. Should we have any money (and given the clubs inability to service current debts that seems unlikely so once again) Rafa has to do a Del boy to get people in and our squad stays the same and short on heads. Any free cash atm needs to be invested in players. Following that regardless of who owns us the hierarchy need to review the whole marketing strategy and finally justify their existence cause atm we are far, far behind on all aspects. The yanks need to leave, take their profit and leave while they still can. Get it right on the pitch, back the gaffa worry about the super stadium another day.
We need the new stadium & we will get it, it is time to say good bye to anfield and stop living in the past 45 thousand cap is not enough.
hicks may sell but there is a mighty chance that he may not and its time to face up to that like many financial experts have stated already it is not the american economy that will determin whether hicks builds the new stadium he has 60mill towards the start up of the stadium after that he will get the money that is needed to complete one way or another.....
The only thing hicks is planing to sell if the rumours are to be believed is Torres and Stevie G to Chelski for 150 Million
