LIVERPOOL FC bosses today answered criticism of the club's new membership scheme, insisting fans need not join to watch football at Anfield.

Initial reports speculated the new system, which costs £29 for adults and replaces the old £3 fancards, was the only way supporters could buy match tickets.

But the club today confirmed the same policy for match-by-match sales with a general sale for fans would apply

The new system will run alongside the existing Priority Ticket Scheme where members can apply for tickets before other fans.

And it will enable fans to snap up seats sold back to the club by season ticket holders unable to attend a particular game.

Any remaining tickets still available can be bought by non-members.

Other membership scheme benefits include a 10% discount in club stores and an executive pen along with the chance to join the queue for a season ticket at Anfield.

But Liverpool fans today reacted angrily to the scheme.

Richard Pedder, from the Liverpool FC Supporters Club, said: "Fans are saying this is a rip-off.

"The club is changing the goalposts all the time."

Fans today flooded the ECHO's website with complaints.
