ROBBIE Keane today hailed his debut day link up with Steven Gerrard and insisted his understanding with the "world class" midfielder is only going to get better.

The duo struck up an instant rapport in the 0-0 draw with Villarreal and Keane could have opened up his account for the Reds after being played in on goal by the Liverpool captain.

That half chance went begging but Keane believes if the service he receives continues to be of a similarly high standard it will be only a matter of time before he starts hitting the target with the kind of regularity he enjoyed at Spurs.

"Obviously, I can't wait to play more with Stevie," said Keane. "He is a world class player and he is able to spot passes that maybe other players don't see.

"That's what happened against Villarreal when he created a chance for me which maybe I should have done a bit better with but the important thing is that those kind of chances come along and that's always going to happen when you're playing with someone like Stevie.

"He's easy to play with because he is such a good player and I thought we linked up well.

"Playing with someone like him can only make my job easier. We had a few good moments and hopefully that will continue."

Having completed his £20m move on Monday, Keane was thrust straight into the action and, despite coming off at half time, the Irish international insisted his debut was everything he had expected it to be.

"It was great to put that jersey on for the first time and get out there and play with the lads," he said.

"It was obviously different because it was away from home and I can't wait to play my first game at Anfield but it was still fantastic.

"The important thing was getting 45 minutes under my belt because it gave me a chance to improve my fitness and to get to know my new team-mates a bit better.

"It's all well and good doing the running in training but it's all about getting your match fitness and games like this one will obviously help."
