Far post: Liverpool v Middlesbrough in bits

MIDDLESBROUGH. Dictionary definition - a yardstick of mid-table mediocrity and Premier League predictability.

At least that's if you take David Gold seriously - and let's face it, not many do with that beard (pictured right).

The Birmingham City chairman's assertion that he would rather have his club's yo-yo existence rather than being "like Middlesbrough" didn't go down to well with Keith Lamb, chief executive at the Riverside.

"I was amused to read David's comments," he said.

"David is a good friend but I can only assume relegation has affected his thinking a little.

"I seriously doubt Boro fans would swap our recent histories.

"Since moving to the Riverside in 1995, we have achieved five major cup finals, are the only English side outside of the so-called big four to have played in a European final, have enjoyed successive seasons of UEFA Cup football, won our first major trophy and enjoyed 11 consecutive years in the Premier League.

"In the meantime, Birmingham have managed a couple of relegations and a lengthy spell in what is now the Championship."

A man who clearly has no time for eccentric co-owners.

Which is okay when he comes to Anfied today then, because none will be in attendance.

WORDS OF WISDOM

"Hopefully I can impress the manager and play regular football because that's what I need if I am to realise my biggest ambition and play for the England senior team."

You have to admire Boro new boy Justin Hoyte's belief that he can convince Fabio Capello to ditch the old boys' brigade.

"He runs and crosses and rarely does anything else."

FANCY A BET?

CAN Fernando Torres repeat the feat he achieved against Middlesbrough last season and notch another hat-trick?

William Hill seem to think so and had him at 16-1 to score a treble earlier this week.

Not too generous either on the chances of Javier Mascherano hitting three goals in the game though. After all, you'd want better odds than 250-1 considering he will be playing in the Olympic final for Argentina.
