Gareth Barry move dented further as midfielder plays and score for Aston Villa in UEFA Cup

GARETH BARRY'S proposed move to Liverpool edged nearer to collapse after the midfielder appeared for Aston Villa in the UEFA Cup last night.

Barry started and scored in his team's 4-1 victory in their qualifying first leg tie against FH Hafnarfjordur in Iceland.

The England international's selection means he will be cup-tied and unable to play for another side in Europe until the knockout stages in February.

However, Villa manager Martin O'Neill insists the latest development does not necessarily rule out a move to Liverpool for Barry.

"I wouldn't be particularly sure until the transfer deadline passes what might materialise, so we'll see," he said.

"But he's our player, and he wanted to play in the game, and we think he's mentally tuned into it, so that's all that matters."

Barry has been a target for Liverpool all summer and lost the captaincy for criticising Villa manager O'Neill's handling of the move.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez had previously made no secret of his desire to sign the 27-year-old.

But chief executive Rick Parry revealed over the weekend that the club's hierarchy regard Villa's £18million valuation as "too high".

Barry has been desperate for a move to Anfield, with Liverpool having first lodged a bid back in May.

However, increasingly strained dealings between the clubs have cast doubt over the transfer, with last night's developments further threatening Liverpool's current interest in the player.

You make me laugh! Edged nearer to collapse? It was dead in the water when you failed to meet our valuation! Did you think all the whingeing, whining and pleading would make any difference to the price? Trotting out all and sundry to furthar your woeful pleas, manipulating the press!! Shameful! The days when liverpool were a commanding force in transfers has gone, get used to it....Your board wont give the chubby one the funds, or, more likely, they never had the funds in the first place!
As for coming back in January and getting him at a reduced price, he will still be contracted to Aston Villa, further established in the England camp and the price will still be too rich for you paupers! So get flogging all that dross while you still can.
Besides, given the way G and H regard the chubby Spaniard, he will probably be long gone before January anyway!

Plainly not - Ratboy O'Neill has spent all summer indulging in all three and has still stubbornly refused to see sense, so I guess you're stuck with a player who the Liverpool fans don't want and who doesn't want to be at your club, and will leave in January at the earliest and certainly in the summer at a vastly reduced price.

In fact it wouldn't surprise me at all if Barry has been tipped the wink that being cup-tied until February would make no difference to Rafa's interest as he'd be bought primarily as a PL player, yet his inclusion in the UCQ side automatically slices £5m off his value.

Either way, who loses? Not LFC.

Ratboy??? Is that really the best you could manage?
Clearly he seems to have upset you. Perhaps you aren't used to being told no and then finding that even when your persistence seems to have paid off, that you simply dont have any funds. As for the usual delusion that you will get him any cheaper in January, he will still be a contracted Villa player, who will have continued to perform to the level we have come to accept and we have further established his England credentials. Add to this that Rafa's replacement will probably be appointed on the proviso that funds are very limited and he may not fancy spending the required £18m in line with your boards philosophy, anyway. So, dream on. After all delusion seems rampant on Merseyside which each new false dawn.

Ratboy? How childish. Does Mommy know you are so disparaging of your betters?

Anyway, it seems that Senor Benitez was all but ready to walk after his boards reluctance to fund the transfer of Gareth Barry and was only prevented from doing so by his 'so-called' amigos...
He'll be gone sooner than later Pool fans and then what? Gillete and Hicks will be able to look around for their 'Yesman' and lets see who you sign then! Alonso wants out, as does Finnan because they were too be sacrificed so the Spanish One could get his own stubborn way! Now they have both got the nark on with him...Oh dear, oh dear.....
