Those Summer Nights

So it's that time of year again, the time of year when you start wondering where all that money you saved on not going the match over the summer actually went.

Well it probably went in Switzerland, or Berlin or even Oslo.

There is no getting away from the buzz a supporter gets during the close season, especially when there is an international competition which eats up most of June, then before you know it your back pencilling in holidays for work around midweek trips to West Ham and the like.

It's been quite a jolly old summer for us Reds, despite the never ending Barry saga. Back in June we watched our very own Fernando Torres light up Euro 2008, and take the trophy back to his native Spain.
Then it was back to business as normal with a trip to Tranmere, where a win meant the pre-season regime was under way. A highlight of the summer months for many Reds may not have been their summer break with the missus, or even having a cold beer in Concert Square in the sunshine, but will probably be the departure of John Arne Riise.

Riise's exit from Anfield was long overdue, but at last we will never have to be graced with another free-kick being struck against a wall. Scott Carson headed for West Brom, while Guthrie and Le Tallec also headed for the exit door.

Finally with Peter Crouch going to Portsmouth after being a victim of Rafa Benitez's rotation system meant we needed a new striker. Oh and we needed a new number seven who can play more than 20 minutes in high profile games in May as Harry Kewell left for Galatasaray.

Well we got our number seven striker in Robbie Keane for £19 million, which made us the summers big spenders, so the papers would have you believe. Despite actually re-cooping the majority of that through sales.

Then of course, like any summer, there is the constant channel flicking to Sky Sports News, just to be greeted by either "Barry Staying/ Gone" or "Ronaldo- Staying/Gone" delete where applicable. All a bit tedious but you just can't help to wonder if any deal has gone through.

So a summer of moves in both directions and a promising pre-season schedule means once again Liverpool fans will be whispering the words "Title" and "Challenge" about the forthcoming season. Every year, there seems to be another piece of the jigsaw missing, but if ever there was a year we needed it, the season ahead is the one.

The knowledge of every Liverpool player should be that if Manchester United win the title next May they have equalled our haul. It will be 18 a piece when we once lead 18-7. If that doesn't cause some form of challenge, then nothing will.
