Tickets penalty for Liverpool away supporters

LIVERPOOL have been punished for their supporters standing up during away games.

Their ticket allocation for the away game with Sunderland on the opening day of the season has been reduced to 600 fewer than the north east club normally allow for visiting fans.

And Liverpool have urged their fans to say in their seats at the Stadium of Light on August 16 to avoid further reductions at other grounds.

Stewards have a responsibility to ensure home fans remains seated at Premier League games but this power does not extend to away supporters.

Reports from the football authorities of constant standing by the Liverpool contingent have been submitted to the local Licensing Authority.

They are the organisation that sets the ground capacity, leaving both football clubs powerless to prevent the ruling.

A Liverpool statement said: "Obviously we are disappointed that 600 Liverpool supporters will not be able to see the match but this shows the power the local authorities have when they have concerns on safety issues.

"In order to reduce the possibility of this decision being taken by other local authorities we would appeal to all our supporters to refrain from persistent standing both at home and away fixtures."

The Sunderland v Liverpool game is the first Setanta Sports live game of the season, and will kick off at 5.15pm on Saturday, August 16.

Liverpool have been allocated 2,361 tickets for the game.
