A PETITION with more than 1,700 signatures has been sent to the Scottish parliament calling for a memorial to Liverpool FC legend Billy Liddell.

Campaigners want to erect a permanent tribute to the Reds icon in his hometown of Townhill, near Dunfermline.

The group will have to persuade MSPs to contribute to the memorial.

The most likely tribute is a cairn with a plaque.

Council officials in the Scottish town have also discussed the possibility of renaming a leisure site as the Billy Liddell sports complex.

Cllr Bill McCulloch, ward member for Townhill, said: "I've spoken to Billy's widow Phyllis and she told me she wasn't keen on a statue as her husband was a modest man.

"We feel a traditional cairn would be very appropriate.

"Billy was an old-fashioned gent who was a role model in the way he lived his life.

"He was a magistrate, did a lot for the community and did a lot while he was playing part-time."

Campaigners have also submitted his name to the Scottish FA to get Billy inducted into their Hall Of Fame.

A decision is expected to made in September.

Billy spent his career at Anfield, signing in 1938 and retiring in 1961, aged 39.

He died in 2001 of Alzheimer's disease and in 2004 was honoured by Liverpool FC with a commemorative plaque at Anfield.

Anyone who wants to contribute can contact Cllr McCulloch on 01383 741 834 or email cllr.bill.mcculloch@gov.uk.
