Belief can be the key for Liverpool against Manchester United

IF you were to want just one thing from the Liverpool team today, it would be that they go out and have a proper go at Manchester United.

There have been times in recent seasons when Liverpool have looked like they are beaten before the game has even kicked off.

It as if they have been lacking the belief that you need to win these kind of games and I would go as far as saying that certain players have actually been intimidated by the prospect of taking on United.

Today this has to change if Alex Ferguson's team are to be defeated by Liverpool in the league for the first time in four years.

Every single Liverpool player has to step out on to the pitch with the belief that they can and will win because unless that is the case it is very unlikely that it will happen.

When the big teams play each other it can often come down to mental strength and the team which has the most is more likely to win.

The dividing line between success and failure and victory and defeat at this level is so small it is untrue.

A bit of outrageous skill, a piece of outrageous fortune, a refereeing decision or a well worked set piece can be the difference between winning and losing, so you have to make sure you are really on your game.

United have been masters of taking advantage of even the tiniest of weaknesses in recent seasons, so it is up to Liverpool to cut out any sloppy mistakes and to take the game to their opponents so it is them who are put to the test.

Hopefully Rafa Benitez will send his team out with a free rein so they can express themselves more than they have in recent meetings with United.

By all means keep things tight at the back because it would be stupid to do anything else, but let's get at them in the attacking third and really have a proper go.

This is an occasion for Liverpool's grade A players to make the stage their own. You want to see our top stars taking on their top stars and then you see who comes out on top.

I genuinely believe it can be Liverpool, but only if they go out and have a proper go at United and genuinely believe that they can win.
