ACADEMY FOOTBALL: Hughie McAuley delighted by Liverpool's response in Manchester United draw
ADAM PEPPER'S second- half penalty gave Liverpool under-18s a point as they drew 2-2 with Manchester United at the Carrington Complex on Saturday.
Hughie McAuley's side was looking to hit back following last week's 4-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers, and although they couldn't win were happy to come away with a point which puts keeps them second, four points behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier Academy League Group C table.
Liverpool led through James Ellison after 12 minutes when he fired in following a good ball from David Amoo.
United hit back within two minutes and then went in front on 20 minutes.
German striker Marvin Pourie had two chances to equalise after the break, but Liverpool's top scorer couldn't take them.
But Liverpool did draw level when Pepper was brought down in the box and the 16-year-old midfielder got up to fire home the spot- kick himself.
Amoo and Astrit Adjarevic both went close to giving Liverpool all three points but in the end they had to settle for one.
McAuley was happy with his side's performance after the disappointment of the week before.
He said: "It was a really good game of football and I'm pleased with the way the lads responded after the Blackburn game. It was an open game and could easily have gone either way in the end.
"It was a decent, hard- working and competitive performance and on another day with the rub of the greeand we could easily have won But we had chances and so did they, so it was probably a fair result."
There are no Academy League fixtures this weekend, but Liverpool will look to get back to winning ways when they return to action on Saturday, November 1 against Bolton Wanderers at the Kirkby Academy (kick-off 11am).
McAuley said: "It is an in- service weekend so we have a break. And in fairness it is not a bad idea because we haven't really had a break as such since we returned on June 15. It gives the lads the chance to have a little blow and get over the knocks and aches and pains they have picked up and come back and start again.
"We have started the season well. We learn from every game. The important thing is is that they work hard and players are improving because that is what we are about."
LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Bouzanis; Scott, Wisdom, Ayala, O'Connor; Amoo, Irwin, Pepper, Ellison, Kacaniklic (Ince 70); Pourie (Adjarevic 75), Ellison. Subs: Duyan, Metcalf, Roberts.
