International outcry

FERNANDO TORRES. Michael Owen. John Barnes. Jamie Redknapp. What do they all have in common? All key players crocked playing for another team while on our payroll, that's what!

But how long can this go on? The landscape has changed out of all recognition in recent years. The Premier League has seen the emergence of the Big Four, of whom we're the fourth. The bar is now so high that a team like Liverpool can't afford a single hiccup. Every game is a big game now. Then there's the Champions League, bigger than ever before.

Yet on top of this increasingly demanding domestic calendar, some deranged fools are piling on more and more internationals. At a time when more and more people care less and less about England! Jamie Carragher has made his views crystal clear, and who can blame him. Now it's the Gerard/Lampard thing yet again. Pick Lamps and have done with it, I say. Our captain has bigger fish to fry.

Then there's our very own FA. They spend all our money on a white elephant in a hideous North London wasteland, fill it with the prawn sandwich brigade and expect us to jump to it. Despite the fact that touring the country worked so well, as it does in every other major country. Despite the fact that if you do build a stadium you should at least put it somewhere like Birmingham so most people can get there. Despite the fact that cup finals at The Millennium were so much better anyway.

And then there's the fact that our club belongs to a city that does even not feel 100% English. England? Call it Londonland. And the Pearly Kings are welcome to it.

Rant over, on to Saturday. Looks like another Steve Bruce banana skin to me. We can't afford to drop another single point, yet this has Stoke written all over it. I'll take the 1-0 right now, thank you very much.

But don't bank on Torres
