Liverpool FC's Daniel Agger ready to return after Martin Skrtel's injury

DANIEL AGGER is ready to grab the chance to re-establish himself in the Liverpool first team following Martin Skrtel's injury misery.
Scans yesterday revealed Skrtel damaged the posterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee when falling awkwardly towards the end of the remarkable 3-2 win at Manchester City on Sunday.
The Slovakia international will see a specialist today to determine the length of his absence, with Liverpool fearing the centre-back could be ruled out for the remainder of the year.
Skrtel's injury has opened the way for room-mate Agger, whose Anfield future has been the focus of intense speculation in recent weeks.
But the Denmark international said: "Of course I hope to get some playing time, but this is not exactly the way I wished to get it. I know Martin very well because I share a room with him when we travel.
"I hope to get my chance and then I will prove that it's my place. On the other hand, it might as well be (Jamie) Carragher's place because I don't know why people only say it is me or Skrtel who are fighting each other for a place in the team."
The form of Carragher and Skrtel had restricted Agger to just an appearance at Standard Liege in the Champions League and a goal-scoring outing in the Carling Cup at home to Crewe Alexandra.
It led to talk in Denmark that the 23-year-old was unhappy with Rafael Benitez and considering buying out his contract in the New Year under the Webster ruling.
Real Madrid have been tracking the centre-back, but Agger said: "I have had to be patient this season and wait for my chance, I know how things are.
"The team have been playing really well and the results have been great, so I couldn't really expect the manager to make too many changes.
"The only thing for me to do was get my head down and concentrate on getting as fit as possible, so that if an opportunity came along, I was ready to take it."
With Sami Hyypia omitted from Liverpool's 25-man Champions League squad in order to meet the new UEFA requirement of at least eight "association trained" players, Carragher and Agger are now the only senior centre-backs available to Benitez in the competition for the remainder of the group stage.
And Agger, who missed almost the whole of last season with a serious metatarsal injury, added: "When you have been out injured for 10 months, you know you are going to have to work really hard to get back into shape. That's why I have been putting extra sessions in at Melwood this season.
"I have been out there on the training pitch when the other lads have finished, because you never know when the call might come.
"It has been worth the extra effort, too, because I feel really fit and strong and ready to step in.
"There have been a few stories about me recently, but I couldn't be happier. I'm really glad to be a Liverpool player, and all I want is to play a part in a great start."
