THE history of Liverpool FC's black players is celebrated in a new film being premiered in the city this month.

The one-hour documentary film, From Gayle To Babel, will be unveiled at Fact on October 27 as part of Black History Month.

Dozens of events are set to take place during October, marking the talents and contribution of the city's black and ethnic minority community.

This year, the annual Liverpool event has been expanded across the region, with organisers changing their name to the Merseyside Black History Month Group.

Chairman Michelle Chambers said: "The group has developed to ensure all residents are involved in what is fast becoming one of the best annual cultural calendar of events Merseyside has to offer. The legacy of work over five years will be the development of the Merseyside Black History Month Group company and charity.

"This year's calendar offers a varied and exciting number of events and there are lots of free events for the citizens of Merseyside to enjoy."

Events include a performance at the International Slavery Museum exploring Being Black In Britain, and a comedy showcase at Novas CUC, including comedian Richard Blackwood.

The annual cultural food feast at Sefton Park Palm House on Sunday October 12 will include a performance by Mobo-nominated jazz saxophonist Yolanda Brown.

Steve Biko housing association will hold young people and elders "crossing ages" arts workshops, and there will be a link up between Black History Month and the Liverpool Irish festival.

A dinner at the Crowne Plaza will be held on October 25, when the Black History Month Achievers Awards will be announced. The Real Thing play at the Philharmonic Hall on October 31.
