RESERVES: Liverpool are beaten by Sturridge's strike

LIVERPOOL Reserves slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Barclays FA Premier Reserve League North last night.

An early strike from City frontman Daniel Sturridge proved to be the difference between the sides on a soaking wet evening at the City of Manchester Stadium.

City dominated the opening exchanges and could have taken the lead after seven minutes but for an excellent block by Liverpool centre-back Martin Kelly.

Sturridge opened the scoring after 13 minutes with a close range effort after Liverpool had failed to deal with a set piece.

Sturridge then clipped the bar with a brilliant free-kick as the home side continued to dominate.

Liverpool's first sight of goal came ten minutes before the break when the excellent Jay Spearing released David N'Gog, but he shot into the side netting.

The French striker was replaced at half-time by Argentine Gerardo Bruna.

Sturridge was denied by a fantastic goal-line clearance from Stephen Darby just after the break, as the striker continued to give the reds all sorts of problems.

Gulacsi made two fine saves from Sturridge whereas for all Liverpool's possession the City keeper had very little to do.

Plessis wasted Liverpool's best opportunity when he shot straight at the keeper from 18 yards when he had Weijl in a better position to his left.

MANCHESTER CITY RESERVES: Johansen, Logan, Williamson, Mee, Berti, Tzachlis, Weiss, Marshall, Ball, Sturridge, Morris.

LIVERPOOL RESERVES: Gulacsi, Darby, Insua, San Jose, Kelly, Plessis, Abalimba (Duran 62), Spearing, N'Gog (Bruna 46), Pacheco, Weijl.
