If only Liverpool had picked up points like this sooner

ONE of the Sunday papers I read stated that Blackburn were facing an "ordinary" Liverpool team.

What is extraordinary however is that but for dropped home points and the aberration against Spurs away we would be leading the Premier League comfortably by now and not just by the one point.

True, on Saturday it felt for a long time that the pattern of the game was depressingly familiar. Lots of possession but no end product.

In fact but for Reina's excellent save from a cracking shot by Pedersen, we'd have gone a goal down. Blackburn were "robust" as you might have expected and quick to the tackle. Babel, it seemed came in for particular attention but even so, the Dutchman continues to disappoint.

When the goal finally came it was fitting that it came from Xabi Alonso. He was man of the match for me and was coolness personified as he slotted the ball past Robinson when it fell to him from a blocked Kuyt shot.

By this time Babel had already made way for El Zhar - which caused a stir as £20m Robbie Keane remained on the bench. Benayoun has also had some stick lately but scored the second with an excellent run and shot down Blackburn's left.

Santa Cruz made it 2-1 but we need not have worried as Gerrard popped up to slot in a third from an astute pass from substitute Riera.

The 3-1 scoreline probably flattered us but come May 2009 maybe we will be crowned champions and they can call us ordinary as much as they like.
