From A Debut to A Rain Drenched Disaster

Aquilani - Debut at Anfield against Fiorentina.jpg

Last night was yet again going to be the night that Rafa Benitez said would get our season back on track. This was going to be our last game in the Champions League before bowing out and going into the lesser known Europa Cup. We had also been told that Aquilani would make his much anticipated debut.

After having my tea I switched on the television and watched as Anfield began to fill up, wishing that I had in fact bought a ticket. Was this because the unveiling of Aqulani was close or was it because I wanted to get behind my team in the place I call home. To be honest I guess, it was both and looking at the empty seats just before kick-off, I wondered if it had been another PR disaster where UEFA had insisted on the seats being given up for the corporate clients, or were Liverpool supporters beginning to desert a sinking ship.

Twenty minutes before kick off the team was announced and I thought perhaps we did have a chance to regain our dignity in the Champions League. It was Cavalieri, Darby, Agger, Skrtel, Insua, Benayoun, Masherano, Aquilani, Dossina, Gerrard and Kuyt. The substitutes were Reina, torres, Aurelio, Kyriakos. Carragher, Spearing and Pacheo. It was our last game in the qualifying group and our second game against Fiorentina. Although we knew that there was no chance of us qualifying, I prayed that the team would go out on a high and prove that we could still be a force in Europe. Ninety minutes later, I sat wondering what and if I could help bring some faith and confidence back into the team.

The evening began with Steven Gerrard being given a glass award by Rafa Benitez and Christian Purslow to mark his 500 performances for his club. In his arms were his daughters Lilly-Ella and Lexi. They did not appear to be flumaxed by the crowd or what was going on around them. Looking at Stevie as they ran from the pitch in their Liverpool kits, I got the impression he was extremely proud of them. I just wish he could be just as proud of his fellow teammates, but I get the feeling that day is a long way off.
The game started with Fiorentina kicking off and taking an early command of the ball. Thankfully though, this did not last long and Liverpool gained possession but problems began to surface straight away. They seemed to be devoid of chances and unable to keep the ball. The game was now only ten to fifteen minutes old and I honestly began to wonder what way it would go? With this in mind I decided to concentrate on watching Aquilani. Tonight was the night that was chosen as his debut match. I watched and was immediately impressed by his moves and turns. He certainly seems to be agile and has what appears to quite a bit of speed. Mixing with his teammates, he quickly seemed to interact with them and their passing seemed to get better for a while.

Had this done the trick I wondered as the team suddenly seemed to realise that there was a game to win. They were actually doing some man to man marking which is unusual in itself. Insua managed to send the ball towards Aquilani and everyone gasped, wondering if he would mark his debut with a goal. He was venturing further up the front than Benitez would have wanted, but another free spirit within the team is something that we desperately need. Agger who had seemed up to that point to be playing well made one of the first mistakes but thankfully Cavalieri managed to kick the ball out. Benayoun was playing in his favoured position on the right and seemed to be enjoying his game and I hoped perhaps he had a goal locked away. Liverpool was still giving the ball away far too easily and began to look vulnerable although Aquilani was certainly enjoying his game. Fiorentina sensed this and began to defend well. Every time a ball was kicked into the goal area either from a free kick or corner it was kicked away or saved.

It certainly looked as though the fates were against us yet again especially when Aquilani went down. I gasped and thought oh know, but luckily he did a head over heels and got up. The game by now had turned and Fiorentina seemed to be in control even trying to persuade the referee to award what definitely was not a penalty. Fiorentina had a corner and I held my breath knowing that our defence and zonal marking do not mix. I watched with my hand on my heart hoping and praying that the usual would not happen. Two corners later, a huge sigh was heard and I managed to breathe again. The camera then switched to Torres warming up and with the clock approaching the 39th minute I wondered if Rafa Benitez was going to do another of his strange substitutions. Would it be Aquilani I wondered as to be honest I expected him to taken off after half an hour. Thankfully though nothing happened and the game was allowed to continue and Liverpool gained the advantage and with Benayoun finally picking up the ball and scoring Liverpool were 1-0 up. Although this was what the supporters wanted, they were very quiet - I guess it was a case of too little too late.

I don't know what was said in the dressing room during the half time break but would it be another case of Fifteen Minutes that Shook the World, I wondered. The team came out and Liverpool kicked off. They were now playing towards the Kop and I hoped that this would give them the inspiration that they needed. Fiorentina though gained control of the ball immediately and Cavalieri was nearly caught out. Dossena who was obviously on the pitch so that any interested parties could see how he played, actually had a good game and seemed to be enjoying himself. Skrtel went down after a nasty tackle and for several minutes it appeared that he may go off. Thankfully though, although a stretcher was called, he limped over to the edge of the pitch and was back on within a couple of minutes.Liverpool quickly regained the initiative and their passing play seemed to have improved, with Benayoun and Agger having a go at scoring, but the all important goal did not appear. You can then all guess what happened, Fiorentina broke up our defence and the score was now level at 1-1.

Was this the signal Rafa Benitez wanted, or was the fact that the clock had reached 63 minutes but Torres was now stripping of? Everybody expected the first substitution to be Aquilani but it was Dirk Kuyt, who had been very quiet throughout the game. The noise from the ground as he run onto the pitch was the highest it had been all evening and he immediately made his mark. He was quickly intercepting the ball and gave the impression that his recuperation was now complete and he was in fact game hungry. The team seemed to have found its feet and we were pushing forward all the time gaining a couple of corners along the way but again the goal that we needed was elusive.

Suddenly the man, we had all wanted to see was replaced by Pacheo. Aquilani had in fact played for seventy five minutes and to be honest I felt that he had done extremely well. Fiorentina by now had also made a couple of substitutions, and with fresh legs now on the pitch began to find ways of breaking up our defense. It happened, Stephen Darby who was also playing his first full game made a horrific mistake and Fiorentina scored. Yet again the Liverpool defence had let the team down. The score was now 2-1 and I will give the kop credit for singing You'll Never Walk Alone as the game finished.
The match ended with the rain absolutely teeming down as the teams left the pitch. A strange thought crossed my mind and I wondered if it was Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley crying as they watched yet another diabolical display by the club that they had pulled out of the dulldrums.

I did not feel like listening to Rafa's after match press conference because I knew what was probably coming. I was right but this time he literally placed all the blame on the team. I agree with this to a point, but as the manager, he must take some the blame, after all his tactics and his player selection must play a great part in the result of the game. Switching on the radio, I expected to be able to join in the after match phone in, but I guess due to the monsoon that was now raining down on Liverpool 4 this was quickly cancelled. I went to bed listening to Pete Price and must have laid there for a good two hours wondering about the match and why we were going through such a bad period in our history.

I have as usual, spent sometime today answering emails from fellow supporters. I have now got to the point where I don't know what to say. They are asking if I know what is happening to our beloved team. How I wish I could give them a straight answer. I am as perplexed as they are because I simply don't know. I have had several of the Rafa must go emails and to be honest although I know I said I would give it until after Christmas, I am beginning to wonder if they are right. He certainly does not seemed to have the dressing room anymore - or to put it another way, he has players that he either cannot control or who refuse to listen to his instructions. The look on his face as he walked from the pitch told a mountain of stories - or did it. The other question is obviously about the players and who will be buying in January. The only way I can answer that is give them my own opinion on the players and how they play. The January transfer window is something that I honestly think will bypass the club as I understand there are no funds available until summer 2010 when the Standard Chartered monies kick in. I know Rafa is hoping to sell some of our dead wood but I wonder if he will in fact be allowed to spend the funds.

Will Sunday be yet again the start of our Season - I honestly do not know but we have a team that is not in the right frame of mind. Will Aquilani play on Sunday, I would love to say yes, but you can bet Rafa will come up with some excuse about the game being too fast and too wild for his fitness level at the moment.

how very true!! lucas will partner masch on sunday, and i hope he puts in a great shift.i really hope our season does in fact kick off on sunday, but i have to accept that if we dont pick up our game, top four is not going to happen..

Srikanth thank you for your comments. I honestly think that Rafa played Aquilani last night just to keep us the supporters happy. I don't know what he has against him because he looked pretty agile to me. You are probably right about Lucas partnering Mascherano on Sunday and as you say, hopefully he will play well as he has improved over the season. I am not so sure about our season starting on Sunday - there are far too many problems within the team at the moment - but then who knows I may be in for a pleasant surprise. I dont think the top four will happen - the rot I believe has gone too far already. I am will very surprised if we get any higher than we are at the moment.

Rafa should start with lucas and masch. Both have had much more gametime and match fitness than aquilani and arsenals mobile midfield will take a lot of stopping. Give him time. Don't set the lad up for a fall. There's no way he can meet our expectations at the moment.

And that's because, really, we can all see that Rafa is doing ok... no really shocking decisions or stupid tactics. It's just not happening. Nothing seems to be working and morale is low.

It's time like these, when everything is against you... including a beachball... that the words 'walking through a storm' should actually mean something.

Hi Gee, Yes Rafa should start with Lucas And Mascherano, but hopefully have Aquiliani on the bench. After all he really does not to get some much needed match practise. I know the Arsenal midfield will take a lot of stopping and you get bet Wenger will ensure that it is his first team on the pitch not his boys. Gee I know there is no way he can meet our expections at the moment but even if he comes on at the magic 60th minute mark that he may be able to help the game. I would not set the lad up for a fall, in fact as I said in my article there was a point in yesterday evening's game where I gasped and held my breath. The last thing we want if for Aquiliani to have another extended period on the bench. His record of injuries in Europe is awful and I would hate that to be repeated.

Rafa is doing okay - I honestly do not think he is. Some of his tactics and decisions do leave something to be desired. There is no morale amongst the team even Stevie at the end of the game looked rather forloan - I dont think the situation at the club has actually dawned on him yet or he is so shell shocked that he simply cannot believe it. Everything is against the team at the moment including the now infamous beach ball. Yes the words Walking Through the Storm should mean something and I wish the players would listen learn and recite the words a few times. It might work the miracle that Liverpool Football Club is now desperately in need of if we are to retain out place amongst the great teams of this country because I for one do not fancy the ridicule the club will face come May.

Aye. The way our luck has been, I get the feeling that had aquilani come on we may have lost him with a strain or tear. It's common after major injuries to have a few minor ones after. The fact is the team should be able to cope without him anyway.

As for Rafa... there are some things we perhaps would do differently, maybe some would attack more, maybe others would try different formations. We will never know if any of that would really have worked. What is clear is that the worst results have come in ways that are hard for the manager to prevent. Last minute goals, freaky performances and bad injuries. With that in mind I challenge you to point to many Rafa decisions that aren't logical.. or tactically sound or make some sense. There aren't many. And given the situation I think that's brave. He knew how much we wanted aquilani - but was strong enough to stick to what he thinks is the best way long term when it would have been easy to do what the fans wanted and then say I told you so when he gets injured.

Whats happening at L'Pool is very wierd. Not only have I not seen it on the Reds before, but I also havent seen such apparent unhappiness in a top flight side for a long, long time. Not since Newcastle, actually.
Rafa's obviously made a few mistakes. And he's also obvioulsy had a really bad injury list to deal with. But I'm wondering what the situation behind the scenes is. The press seem to particularly have been targeting LFC players and staff for months now, hinting at unrest (MAsch is going, Benitez was going last year, Agger, Babel actually the list is pointless because they've reported that everyone is leaving at some point or another.
So is there vast discontent behind the scenes? Or are the Press causing the discontent? I dont think its just football that's causing the looks on the players faces that I've been witnessing for the last year or so, because even when we were winning at the tail of last year, there seemed to be a pressure on them - and more than fans expectations beause at the ttime they were fulfiling those. I think there's something very odd happening.
Or it could just be that if the future of a great club is cast into doubt by financial adventuring then this resonates right hrough the club to the players.

Hi again Gee, It is as you say that we may loose Aquilani to a minor injury but I am afraid it has got to the point where that we have to take. The team should not only be able to cope without him but without any of them when they are missing. A good manager would make sure that he had players that we able to slot in as and when necessary. Bill Shankly was a good example or being able to do this.
Regarding Rafa there are many things I feel that he should have done and be doing differently.Certainly you are right in saying that perhaps he should be trying different formations, the one that he persists in using is definitely not working and our results are testament to that without taking the injuries into account. You say our manager cannot prevent things such as last minute goals and freaky performances. The last minutes goals can definitely be prevented by a defense that has been trained properly and as for the injuries as I said Rafa should have players trained and able to slot in without any problems. Yes I agree that Rafa has stuck to his guns over Aquilani but that in fact be the start of a false dawn. It is quite possible that due to very little match practice, he may get injured quite quickly because his muscles are not up to their full potential . That lad needs to be able to play now in every game even if only for a few minutes. If things do not improve on the pitch it may be a case of us the supporters turning around and saying to the club and Rafa We told you so.

Faith Fulcher Author Profile Pagesaid:

Hi Mazzar, I totally agree with you, What is happening at Liverpool is very weird. I certainly have not seen it for many years. There is I am sure something going on behind the scenes that none of are aware and of course it is affecting the players. It would affect anyone in any business if things were not as they should be. I have tried to contact Tom Hicks a couple of times but I am afraid his rudeness is another thing that has turned me against them. All I want is a simple chat and perhaps an explanation about what is happening to our club. Rafa has as you say made some mistakes, just as everyone does but they seem to be multiplying rather getting better.
The press I am afraid and I believe it is the mainly the London press will target a club that they feel is in free fall. They will sense if a player is unhappy and of course the current situation with the clowns that own us does not help matters. I am afraid until things improve we are going to be an easy target. I have actually complained to a couple of the Mersey based reporters in a certain newspaper although I doubt it will get anywhere.
I aqree with you about the looks on the players faces. As I said there is something going on behind the scenes but what I don't know. There have certainly been rumours about arguments amongst the senior staff and this must resonate down to the players. Yes they are under pressure to perform. That I am sure is something that will affect their performance in some way. I also think that the foreign players do not really understand the Liverpool way and perhaps are unhappy at actually being at an English club. The future of the club due to the total financial mismanagement must also have an effect on their performance No one is going to perform properly if they know that perhaps they may be sold just to keep the clubs bankers from knocking at the door. It is a horrible situation for club and supporters alike and causing me to spend more hours worrying about them than I should

The only good part is that no matter how bad we are playing, we still find ourselves only 3 points off the 4th spot.I feel the Champions League exit was the exact "kick up the backside" that the players needed.I still feel that we have the quality to make it to 4th spot,or maybe even 3rd, if we can play even half as well as how we played in the latter stages of last season. We have to accept that if we dont make it in the top four,Torres will leave. He is a world class player, probably the star of the world cup,if spain win it or not.And if Liverpool cannot offer CL football, there is not one thing stopping him from leaving.Like u said, he is after all a foreigner, and not everyone has the dedication of Gerrard. And Masch is not far behind.I hope and pray this does not happen to my beloved club, but this is what we are staring at.However with a bit of luck,it can all turn around.Hopefully come March, we would be steamrolling teams with the attacking triumvirate of StevieG,Torres and Aquilani!!!And if we can land some silverware, all the woes of this season will be forgotten.Ah, if only dreams came true!! :) YNWA

Faith Fulcher Author Profile Pagesaid:

Hi Srikanth, I can understand what you saying when you say that although we are in 7th place at the moment, it still means that we only need three more points to reach the 4th spot, At this point in time though, I cannot see the team marching up the table. The team is too unpredictable at the moment, we win a couple, loose a lot more and hey according to the manager it is just a blip - I am sorry but the inconsistency is a lot more than that. It is a diabolical disaster. We are Liverpool Football Club and those sort of playing statistics simply are not good enough. Will the Champions League exist be a kick up the backside - I honestly dont think so - how many of them have they had already this season? If by chance a miracle will happen now that we have a more or less injury free squad then perhaps 3rd place may happen, I certainly cannot see us going any higher. Torres has said that he will never leave Liverpool, but as you say unless we can get a champions league place next season, ichy feet may take over and he will walk. Stevie G will I think stay though, his loyalty to his club and city i s I hope paramount and he realises that this season was just one of those things. The problem is of course that if the revenue is not there, our wonderful owners may decide to sell him anyway to keep the banks off our backs. The next few weeks will be crucial to the club and if as you and I, as well as thousands of other supporters hope, the lads finally do wake up and things turn around, come March I hope that the awful start we have had, will be forgotten as we go into the trophy room and look at the silverware. As you say if only dreams came true - who knows what fate has in store for Liverpool Football Club
