2010 Starts With The Same Old Problems

Yesterday Liverpool Football Club began their journey along the road that would hopefully lead them to one of the two trophies that they still have a chance of winning. This was the day that clubs involved in the Premiership began their assault on the annual football competition, The Football Association Cup, (the FA Cup). There were the usual pick and mix selection of matches and Liverpool had drawn Reading, who is now languishing in the Championship after their fall from the Premiership league.
This was a game that should have been a walk over for the likes of Liverpool Football club and its current squad. But would it be was the question on everyone's lips as kick off approached. Liverpool's form had throughout 2009 been an absolute disaster and had only just begun to show the beginnings of a very slow improvement. Rafa Benitez knew that to restore the very fragile faith that some supporters now had in the club he had to put out what he felt was his strongest team. This was Reina, Darby, Carragher, Skrtel, Insua, Kuyt, Gerrard, Lucas, Aurelio, Ngog and Torres. The substitutes were Cavaliere, Aquilani, Benayoun, Kyriakos, Babel Spearing and Degen. Referee for the afternoon was Martin Atkinson.
The match began without some of the travelling supporters, as being January; the weather decided to do its bit and the snow caused quite a few problems as people travelled south. After taking what seemed quite awhile over the toss Liverpool kicked off on what looked like a pitch from the past. It was very uneven and well worn. I guess that is what happens when you share it with a Rugby club. Lucas was bought down almost immediately due to a Reading player slipping and catching him in the face but Martin Atkinson quite wisely decided to ignore what had happened.
Already though, the same old problems with Liverpool's defence decided to show their ugly head far too quickly with Reading finding ways through very quickly. I sat watching the screen and wondered if my worst fears were going to be brought to the fore. Were we going to go out of yet another completion that we should breeze through? Was the thought, now going through my mind every so many minutes.
Rafa Benitez for once had decided to play 4-4-2 with Stevie running through the middle, but this did not appear to improve things and the team still had a very lacklustre feeling about it. Reading who had obviously done their homework, ensured that Stevie, Dirk and Ngog were all marked with a great passion and this for some reason seemed to unsettle the team and every ball that was kicked seemed to kicked into a no man's land. There was never anyone there to meet it. Young Stephen Darby was doing his best after being given another start by Rafa Benitez but unfortunately fouled a Reading player and they were awarded a free kick. Once this had been taken and with the ball heading on its way towards the goal, it appeared that Jamie was again doing the work of three people. Why the others do not have the courage or the inclination to carry out their duties on the pitch I honestly do not know.
It was becoming increasingly evident that Reina was going to be under a great deal of the pressure that afternoon. Reading I believe had every intention of becoming the afternoon's giant killers and were determined to win the game. Suddenly though Liverpool found their feet and came back into the game and began their own onslaught through the Reading defence. A shot at goal was taken which led to problems which could have resulted in a card for the Reading goalkeeper but again Martin Atkinson decided to let play continue. There still seemed to a element of panic within the Liverpool team with the ball going here, there and everywhere although Torres and Ngog did have a go at the goal with the ball going wide.
Play resumed very quickly and Reading made some very good moves to ensure that the ball was within reach of the goal, and yes Insua who was it appeared having a very bad game made a mistake and was given a yellow card. Awarding Reading a free kick, they quickly took the advantage and as per usual Zonal Marking and our leaking defence did us proud once again. Reading were now 1-0 up and the look of sheer pleasure on their faces told a million stories. Would this wake the team up properly I wondered as play began again. Balls were again going into no man's land but Torres did manage to hit one over the bar. Ngog also had another go at the goal but could still not hit the target and our afternoon was heading for another one of those that we did not really want to remember. Then Stevie G did what Stevie does best and kicked a wonderful ball, which Dirk Kuyt actually jumped over and found the back of the net. We were now level and would hopefully go in at half time knowing that we could pull the game back. The game continued with Torres showing how good he was on the ball. But again this was unfortunately yet again lost before any of the other players could make their mark in the goalmouth. Thankfully though the half time whistle was blown and the players departed, for what I hoped would be a rousing cry of wake up lads - we need to win this.
The second half started with Reading kicking off and almost immediately showed that Liverpool Football Club had not learnt the lessons of the first half. Torres and Kuyt were not connecting their play, so wasting valuable balls and time. Our defence was still allowing the Reading players through too easily and it took the brilliance of Pepe Reina to save a certain goal. Insua had several times this afternoon showed that he is not fit to play in a Liverpool shirt, his concentration for most of the match had been deplorable and he had to be rescued yet again.
It was at this point in the game that the Reading goalkeeper sustained what looked like a hamstring injury and had to be replaced. Would the youngster now in goal be our salvation and let in a couple of goals. Fate had other ideas and Reading sensing again that they could possible push forward for a win seized their chances and Reina had one of what I will call his slippery hand mishaps and nearly let a ball through.
Liverpool then had a period of possession that showed perhaps we could pull the rabbit out of the hat so to speak. The camera switched to the edge of the pitch and showed that Aquilani was warming up. Our part timer and mollycoddled player was about to come onto the pitch. Ngog who had not really had a good game was the player he was going to replace. He immediately became part of the action and began to take part in a few of the short passes but nothing stood out and as had happened during most of the game, there was no one about to meet the ball. At this point Reading and Liverpool made another substitution with Benayoun replacing Aurelio.
I guess that Benitez was hoping that perhaps Benayoun would play his super sub role and give us the goal that we now desperately needed. Torres then seemed to take command of the game for a little while creating several chances along with Kuyt but unfortunately even the Reading substitute goalkeeper knew how to stop them reaching the back of the net.
At the other end of the pitch Church again was allowed all the freedom he wanted and nearly breached the goalmouth. Reina after saving the ball actually tapped him on the head as a mark of respect. But the clock was now running down and both teams were hitting the panic button, which lead to both Torres and Mills being booked. As if to say, I don't care, Torres got hold of the ball, had a good run and with 4 minutes extra time on the clock, shot at goal - that fickle thing called fate decided it was going to be just too high and hit the net.
The whistle was then blown and the Liverpool team were yet again shown up to be just a shambles and a shadow of what they should be. We had been held to a draw by a team, we should have walked over. We are now facing a reply at Anfield on 13th January 2010. I just hope something happens before then because otherwise, I honestly believe we will go the way of Manchester United (lost to Leeds - Sunday lunchtime).
Several things puzzled me during the game though:-
The main one obviously though is why is it that Benitez appears to be unable to stop the rot that is going through the team in an unstoppable way?
Why was he discussing the tactics with Pelligrino when Sammy Lee is the assistant manager? Do I detect a power struggle or is Benitez trying to prove that he is in fact better than Bill Shankly. Of course though we all know he is not.
I know Reina is a world goalkeeper, but just recently he seems to be making small mistakes and his touch seems to be now in question. Maybe the lack of desire to play for
Liverpool has now begun to reach him?
I have been a Liverpool supporter now for most of my life and I have never seen such a ramshackle group of players. Yes we have had bad times before, under Graeme Souness and at the end of Gerard Houiller's reign but this time the situation appears to be a lot worse and there does not seem to be anyone around who is brave enough and capable enough to stop it either on the playing or managerial side of the club.
We are now languishing in seventh position in the league and to be honest the top four on yesterday's performance is years away. Gerard Houiller was shown the door when we were in that position so why is it not happening now. I have said it many times and I honestly believe it now. Yes we have had some good times under Rafa Benitez but there comes a time when people need to move on and I believe that time is now. We need someone who can regain the dressing room and restore the confidence in our great team. I am a little fed up with Liverpool Football Club being the laughing stock it has become in the London press. I want the lads to go out there and prove them all wrong - will it happen - I wish I could say yes - but at this point in time with my hand on my heart I have to say No.

My friend Reina is not the problem. Insua continues to be the weakest link in the team and other teams have figured that out. Lucas has improved as the season has gone on but he has nothing about him , His positional play is poor, and he doesn't support play well enough, his strength in the tackle is not good enough Kyut is a hard worker but for a player on the right wing he lacks touch pace and creativity. Thereare too many average players in the side! Last year we had Alonso, and Gerrerd etc knew they could count on him to direct play and make the smart passes. We are missing that composure . I believe the relationship between Gerrard and Alonso was the most important in the team. They had the game intelligence that Benitez talks about and linked up in crucial moves. Aquailini from what I have seen is a pass and mover not a controller of the game .I know it is early days but we need a leader in midfield and Benitez sees Gerrard too important now for that role. The team just seems so disorganised and lacking heart and real leadership. I can only assume there are problems with confidence and relationships within the dressing room!!!
Hi John, I did not actually say that Reina was the problem. I just feel that lately he has been a little sloppy with his handling of the ball.I know Insua in one of the main problems in our defence at the moment and of course other teams have fathomed that out. Rafa does not change his tactics so that must be one of the easiest things for the opposition to do. I agree with you about Lucas, he is improving slowly and with the right people around him could actually become an asset to the team. Kuyt at the moment is very tired and could certainly do with a few games off, but I honestly do not think that will happen as there is no one else that Rafa can actually trust along that wing. We have players that are well below average in the team John and something needs to be done to ship them out. As you say Gerrard and Alonso did have a good relationship and we could do with to happen again with other players - but the question is will it? The team John is as you say very disorganised and needs a good leader to pull them around and I don't mean a new captain. The dressing room John was I believe lost several weeks ago.
Cannot imagine why Rafa decided to play both Ngog and Torres upfront (two of the same kind!). They were many times caught within a few metres of each other.
No wingers - no game! Rafa cannot understand that the English game is so fast that no bl***y right or full back can act as winger and retreat back in time.
How can Carra act as left back?????
Lucas is below average, cannot be constructive, count the number of passes lost or inoquous (without a value). Wenger got Ramsey for less than what we paid for Lucas!
Aquilani has not got enough pace and is quickly knocked off the ball, like Johnson is.
We backpass too much and kill most of our counter attacks.
Reina should get two defenders near each post. We were damn lucky against Villa with that Carew header, Reina was nowhere.
Why use SG to take corners when SG can be a threat in the air - something which we lack since (Rafa) let go off Hyppia.
We have the best lone striker in the world and yet our game is not programmed to contain the opponents in our own half. We congest the opponents' half making it more difficult for Torres to move around.
Our players' off the ball movement is appalling and their dribbling skills boyish.
Our back four - two central defenders, Carra + Agger or Skrtel = OK.
Insua too short though skillful and Johnson skillful but easily knocked off the ball.
Rafa must start to bring in tough British guys from the Championship at a good price.
How about Beckford for a start...
Hi squirrell32 I will try and answer to your comments as best as I can.
Sometimes I wonder if Rafa actually knows what he is doing when he picks the team. As you say it was strange to see Ngog and Torres play up front together. You are right when you say they were caught within a few feet of one another - thank god they did not meet - then where would we be as a team. I think you may well have hit the nail on the head when you say that Rafa does not realise how fast the English game is - That could actually be why we are having so many problems. Carra is well known to dislike the positions that he has to play other than his favoured one. Lucas is improving so I think we must give him the benefit of the doubt at the moment. Aquilani has been wrapped up in mothballs for so long that I think he is actually afraid of the ball - he is I believe scared that a good kick would kill his ankle and hey presto he is out again. I know we back pass to much - that is because the team are afraid of attacking. Why he uses Stevie to take the teams corners I do not know, but I guess Rafa must feel he is the best person to do so. We do have a great striker in Torres but I believe he needs a good partner alongside him - a natural striker - I doubt though that Rafa will go into that market - he seems devoid of the fact, that Torres cannot work on his own. I would love Rafa to start looking at the English market but you and I both know for some reason he and his scouts prefer to look abroad. Also don't forget at the moment there are no funds available. All deals made this month I believe are to be loan deals only.
As You guys all said, the problems are very obvious. You really sometimes must ask yourself, how cannot Rafa see those problems. For me biggest one: allot of average players brought for allot of money: Lucas, Babel, Riera, do not wanna mention Degen! I would love to see Kuyt playing in front, behind Torres, working/making space for Torres-more opportunities. Kuyt, as You both said, lacks pace(!!) and creativity. On left Yossi is best solution, as for me allot better player as the likes of Riera or Babel. Aurelio is for me too slow to play on high level. I see Aquilani as very creative player, he may lack (now!!) physical presence in team, but everyone could see in few games he has great passing/creative abilities, I think, if not injury prone, he could become important asset of the team!. I never had a good opinion about Lucas, I admit he got better i this season, but may it be because every other player do not play good either, so he, with his simple passing just get to good away with? He is still losing ball to simply, lacks physical presence, well, one of the most important things in his position!!!. So, he may be good for weaker teams games, but NO WAY playing on high level!. We MUST get (next season) new quality wingers, both sides, I would say, but nobody knows how much money there would be available. Priority must be 4th place. If we don't get at least one player in attack in winter TP, I don't think it is possible. Special if there would be ANY injuries of Torres!!. Chelsea, ManU and Arsenal have reservation on top four places, so it is us, Spurs or Citizens. I say we need allot of luck and none injury problems. About Rafa, well, if he don't, more or less, overhaul team next season, bring at least three quality players for first eleven, and two more for a bench, I do not see bright and successful short term future.
I'm obvious not english, so sorry for poor grammar :).
Hi Bennyred - Thank you for your comment. Your English and your grammar is just fine -
Believe me Bennyred I ask myself day in and day out why Rafa refuses to acknowledge that he has problems. Yes he has bought a lot of average players for an awful lot of money - many of the totally overpriced, that I am sure of. Lucas is improving so we must give the lad a chance. Babel, who incidentally Rafa said today he was not going to sell and Riera do not have the passion that is needed for our great club. They are I believe just interested in the wage packet at the end of the week. Would it work with Kuyt playing just behind Torres, to be honest I am not sure it would - we definitely need another striker to back him up. You say that Aquilani could be a very creative player, but will Rafa give him a chance to prove it - he treats him like a small child and only plays him when he feels like it. Without a lot of full games we are not going to see anything like the best out of him. I am not sure what the situation with funds will be during the summer transfer window - at the moment though there are no funds available as far as I know- hence that is why the club is looking at loan signings only. i would love to see us get fourth place but at the moment with a team that is totally devoid of passion and commitment - it simply is not going to happen and that is beyond belief for a club like Liverpool.
