How Not to Upset The Boss

This weekend was another one of those on Liverpool Football Clubs calendar that needs to be forgotten. We had the familiar end of match hiccup at Stoke and the usual excuses afterwards. That I guess is Rafa Benitez's way of keeping his bosses happy. Mind you , seeing that they are Tom Hicks and George Gillett that is a fairly easy task as they appear to know nothing about the English game of football.

A little bit further down the chain of command we have the player's who armed with today's technology, decide to broadcast to the world that they are angry with the boss.

You would have thought that with the all the bad publicity that Facebook and Twitter receive when oops- I should not have done that is announced as yet another unwelcome comment becomes common knowledge that people would think twice before publishing anything. Unfortunately it appears that the youngster's of today never learn or for some reason believe that they are untouchable.

This weekend, it was revealed in the press that Ryan Babel had decided to vent his anger at Rafa Benitez to the world, rather than request a meeting with him in private to discuss things. He used Twitter - which is basically a site where you can text messages as though you were using a phone.

Rafa Benitez who was already being bombarded with questions about a dressing room bust up with Stevie G during the cup tie with Reading, was suddenly made aware of that another of his player's was taking part in a dressing room revolt. It turns out that rather than speak to Rafa directly about his failings and lack of appearances on the pitch, he decided to let the world know. Babel of course was aware of the coverage this would receive due to the current malaise at Liverpool Football Club.

In the Tweet, Ryan Babel has accused Rafa of not supporting him, after finding out that he had been dropped from the squad. I am sorry Ryan, but when you are not playing well and have been given chance after chance to prove yourself, what else is your manager supposed to do. He also queried why after having a good season last year and scoring ten goals, he was continually left out of the squad. Again I guess the answer is that, Rafa feels that his fitness is not what it should be. There is also the fact that Rafa has so many players for the wrong positions that he likes to try them out every now and again. He also said that he has never had a fight with the manager and kept things to himself - may be that is the problem, it is always wiser to speak out. If you get rebuffed, then try to speak to someone else who may be able to explain it better.

It has since been reported in the press today that Babel was called into the office and asked for an explanation. This apparently annoyed him even more and like a spoilt child stormed off after being told in no uncertain terms that his Twitter account had to be shut down. He was telephoned I believe a while later and told to report back to the office, which he did and was immediately fined a week's wage's estimated at around £60,000.

Babel was also told that he had no future at Liverpool Football club. This may well open the door for Birmingham to bid again, but according to media reports Galatasaray is another club that is interested in signing the player.

There is of course a lesson to be learnt from this. If you want to keep on the right side of the boss, never tell your friends something through a social networking site. It is quite possible that even if you don't tell the world they will. Ryan Babel will in the next few months learn the effect that his childish outburst will have on his life. Unfortunately, he may find that it would in the end have been better to stay quiet.
