THE fact that Fabio Capello has ordered Steven Gerrard to prove that he is injured shows just how badly trust has broken down between club and country.

Steven reported the injury to Liverpool's medical staff straight after the victory over Bolton on Saturday and was sent for a scan which showed that he had suffered a torn groin.

Under FIFA laws, England have the right to have Gerrard assessed by their own medical experts but surely it would have been better for everyone if Capello had taken Liverpool at their word and left him on Merseyside for treatment?

LIVERPOOL are unhappy with the actions of the Football Association after an injured Steven Gerrard was ordered to travel south to link up with the England squad.

The Anfield outfit declared Gerrard unfit to feature in his country's friendly against Germany tomorrow after a scan revealed the midfielder suffered a minor groin tear during the weekend win at Bolton Wanderers.

However, despite Liverpool withdrawing their skipper from the squad, the FA insisted the player journey to England's base at Watford to be checked over by their own medical staff.

I'M surprised Steven Gerrard had to go all the way to Watford just be told what he already knew - that he was injured and wouldn't be fit for England's friendly with Germany tomorrow.

Surely if his club have ruled he will be out for a week, they have medical evidence they can send to England to prove this? It's not like they're just taking a wild guess.

The only possible explanation I can find is Fabio Capello just playing a bit of tit-for-tat with Liverpool after they booked Gerrard in for an operation during the England games in September.

STEVEN GERRARD reported for England duty last night - even though he has withdrawn from the squad for Wednesday's friendly with Germany.

Gerrard has been ruled out by Liverpool for "seven to 10 days" after suffering a muscle tear at Bolton on Saturday, which also makes him doubtful for Premier League home game with Fulham.

But England coach Fabio Capello still made him travel to the team's base in Watford, where he will be assessed by Football Association medical staff before a final decision on his availability is reached.

HE has been hailed by Alex Ferguson as "the most influential player in England bar none", described by John Barnes as "Europe's complete midfield player" and Kaka says he "would like to have him in my team".

That player is Steven Gerrard. The same Steven Gerrard whose value to the England national team was apparently in question following what was, by his own high standards and admission, a disappointing individual performance against Kazakhstan.

If you had believed some critics, who mysteriously disappeared following his display against Belarus, Gerrard is not fit to lace Frank Lampard's boots, which is akin to arguing Shakespeare couldn't sharpen Wordsworth's pencil.

STEVEN GERRARD hopes to have silenced some of his doubters with last night's inspired England performance in which he scored the opening goal and set up the matchwinner.

The Liverpool skipper put England ahead against Belarus but the hosts then gave Fabio Capello's men a genuine scare, equalising through Pavel Sitko and threatening to take the lead.

But, after being moved into a more central role from the left wing in the second half, Gerrard orchestrated a thrilling second half counter.

IT'S fair to say that Ashley Cole has never been my favourite footballer.

Yet at Wembley on Saturday, I found myself disgusted and shocked by the treatment he received at the hands of the so-called 'England Fans', a race which I have derided in this column before.

For those of you who had tired of the tripe dished up before half-time, and had turned over to watch much better footwork on Strictly Come Dancing, Cole was subjected to a barrage of boos every time he touched the ball after a miserable back-pass (at least I think that's what it was) presented Kazakhstan with an easy goal and potentially a way back into a match that was previously dead and buried.

STEVEN GERRARD is determined to prove to Fabio Capello that he is England's top midfielder.

And the inspirational Liverpool captain has pledged to bring his club form to the international arena if coach Capello sticks by him.

The spotlight has fallen on Gerrard and Frank Lampard again recently, with some pundits believing they are too similar in style to play together.

STEVEN GERRARD has appealed to England manager Fabio Capello not to give up on him - as he claimed a midfield partnership with Frank Lampard can still work.

The Liverpool skipper admits he has struggled to transfer his impressive club form to the international arena and revealed he has been "trying too hard" to be a success for his country.

Gerrard was below par during the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on Saturday despite Capello employing an unusual 4-1-2-3 formation specifically to accommodate the attacking talents of both the 28-year-old and Lampard.

However, Gerrard ended the game in a holding midfield role after the half-time tactical switch to a more conventional 4-4-2 that sparked England into life and helped secure a 5-1 win.

STEVEN GERRARD has a huge influence on the outcome of matches when playing in the red of Liverpool.

But once he puts on the white of England he too often finds himself reduced to the kind of role where he can be nowhere near as effective.

Which is why manager Fabio Capello needs to put an end to the debate over whether Gerrard can play alongside Frank Lampard in the England midfield - and leave out the Chelsea player.

That is no disrespect to Lampard, who has been outstanding for his club this season and can lay claim to the title of the Premier League's player of the season so far.

THE tabloids tried hard to drum up a controversy after Jamie Carragher's new book revealed he loved his club more than his country.

Only Stan Collymore bit because it seems that everyone agrees with Carragher's forthright views.

"You do not want to hear things like that, but I do understand where someone like Carragher is coming from," said Mark Perryman, of the England Fans' Group.

United with England?

"The Liver Bird mauled the three lions in the fight for my loyalty."

That's the thought of Jamie Carragher in his new book "Carra- My Autobiography". In fact that's the view of any sane Liverpool fan this morning.

Whilst the national media drool over who Capello will be choosing ahead of tonight's 'crucial' game in Zagreb, all us Kopites are thinking about is whether Gerrard and Torres will be fit before Saturday.

THERE'S been a lot of hot-air and hysteria since Jamie Carragher's honest admission that he preferred winning with Liverpool above winning with England.

You'd think he'd said he deliberately thought about scoring an own goal for Germany against the national side the way some people have reacted. It's ridiculous!

Jamie said he always gave his best for England and some people are forgetting that is exactly what he always did.

LIVERPOOL fans have given Jamie Carragher their backing after the Reds star admitted he has always put club before country.

Carragher came in for a storm of criticism yesterday after extracts of his forthcoming autobiography were published in a national newspaper in which he revealed an England defeat "never hurt me in the same way as losing for my club".

He even went as far as saying he "would rather miss for England than LFC", when discussing his England penalty miss against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.

JAMIE CARRAGHER has the full backing of Liverpool supporters in his view that playing for his club was more important to him than representing his country.

And even some of England's most fanatical followers have admitted that they fully understand the defender's stance.

Carragher revealed an England defeat "never hurt me in the same way as losing with my club" despite missing a penalty as England went out of the 2006 World Cup against Portugal in a shoot-out.

SCOTT CARSON has set his sights on regaining his England place after ending a three-year spell as a "footballing nomad".

Carson was officially unveiled as a West Brom player for the first time following his £3.25million move from Liverpool.

The 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, was pilloried for his error in the Euro 2008 qualifier with Croatia at Wembley.

WHICH Liverpool team will turn up at Stamford Bridge on Sunday?

Nothing the Reds do against Chelsea can alter the fact that their title bid this season is over.

But what is important is that it will determine just where Rafa Benitez's side are in terms of the Premier League.
