RAFA BENITEZ admits he doesn't know if Xabi Alonso will ever pull on a Liverpool shirt again.
The Spanish midfielder, who has been constantly linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, made his first appearance of pre-season as a late substitute in yesterday's 5-0 victory over Singapore.
In the build up to the match Benitez revealed he had held talks with the 27-year-old - urging him to spurn Real's advances and commit his future to the Reds.
However, asked whether yesterday's game was Alonso's last for the club, Benitez said: "You never know, you have to ask him.
"Everyone has been asking me about the same question for two months. I think it's a question for him, not us.
"We signed him five years ago and we renewed his contract two years ago.
"We know that he's a great player and that's the reason we signed him and renewed his contract.
"We were not talking with Real Madrid and he knows our position.
"I was very clear the other day. He is our player and has three more years on his contract.
"At the end of the day it all depends on him."
Alonso refused to discuss his future on this trip and failed to reassure Asian fans who have pleaded with him.
Fellow Spaniard Alvaro Arbeloa appears to be heading closer to the Anfield exit door.
Real Madrid are set to seal a deal for the defender who was the only fit outfield player not involved against Singapore. Both Philipp Degen and Jay Spearing were preferred to Arbeloa at right-back.
Meanwhile, Benitez has hailed Liverpool's pre-season tour of the Far East as the perfect preparation for the new Premier League campaign.
The squad were set to touch down on Merseyside this morning after flying straight home after their emphatic win in front of 50,000 at the National Stadium.
Krisztian Nemeth netted twice and there were also goals for Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres as they secured their first pre-season triumph.
Benitez said: "When you go to Asia sometimes you think it will be tough with all the travelling but it's been really good and the fans have been fantastic.
"The atmospheres have been great and everyone has wanted to help us. When you see the faces of the fans you know that it was good to come here.
"We've been here for a week and today you could see that the team was stronger and fitter.
"It was a good game, especially in the second half when we had more space and there were a bit tired. We could go forward and create more chances.
"We worked hard and played at a high tempo with a professional mentality.
"We won and scored a lot of goals so I think that will make the next game easier.
"If we can play these kind of games with this intensity, it will be really good to improve the condition of the players. We need to be a little bit sharper but I feel it's just a question of time."
Benitez praised Hungarian striker Nemeth who only came on with half an hour to go but netted with two clinical finishes.
"Krisztian showed his quality in front of goal and I'm pleased for him," Benitez added.
"He was really good two years ago for the reserves and scored a lot of goals but he had some injury problems last year. He showed today that he's a great finisher and a player with a future."
The Reds next friendly is against Espanyol in Barcelona on Sunday.
Glen Johnson missed yesterday's game due to an Achilles injury, while Martin Skrtel is expected to be out for up to three weeks with a hamstring strain.
