Jamie Carragher
Over the last few days a lot of criticism has been made about the way that Jamie has been playing. Is this because of his age and stamina or the fact that he is unsettled due to not playing in his usual position?
For years Jamie has been the mainstay of Liverpool's defense saving many balls that otherwise would have hit the back of the net. Yes, like most players he has also suffered the indignity of scoring an own goal, but that is I believe part and parcel of maturing as a footballer. He certainly has not let them bother him in the slightest.
Jamie is a home grown player. He was born in Bootle and for most of his early life supported Everton and in fact had a trial with them after being with Liverpool Football Club for 2 seasons as a youngster. Luckily for the red side of Merseyside, this did not work out and Jamie realised that his rightful path in life was laid out in front of him at Liverpool Football Club. He went back under Steve Heighway and Hugh McAuley and very quickly embarked on his first team career. He is now the club's vice captain and takes the armband whenever Steven Gerrard is not available.
From
From that moment to this, Jamie has been stalwart for the team, he always gives his best and has saved Liverpool Football Club from many an embarrassing score line. One of the most memorable times I have heard him talk about the game was after the 2005 Champions League cup final. Jamie, said that he had run himself ragged and although he fell on the pitch towards the end of the game due to cramp, he picked himself up, found some energy and helped the team towards the penalty shootout. That in my eyes is true sportsmanship - a man who for love of his city and his team had no intention of giving up.
Questions though, are now being asked about his fitness level. Jamie has reached the age that a lot of footballers dread. He is now 31 and knows that his career will soon be drawing to a close. He has said that he would like to continue to 35 but obviously fitness levels and the amount of games are going to soon come into play. Jamie is someone who has looked after his body throughout his football and is I should imagine as fit as some of his counterparts. Unfortunately a lot of the supporters including myself have noticed that his reactions and his speed are not as good and as quick as it used to be.
Also Rafa has him playing out of position at the moment. For a man who for many years has basically not moved more than a couple of feet, this will take a lot of adapting too. He has the much younger Skrtel playing alongside him at the moment and I think that is also causing a few problems. Skrtel has a habit of barging into the play, without first looking to see if Jamie is going for the ball, hence the accident a few weeks ago. The result, Jamie had a cut head and Skrtel a fractured jaw. When Sami Hyppia was in the team, they had over the years developed a partnership where each one of them knew what the other one was doing. The other thing I think is causing problems is zonal marking. Jamie is from the old school of players and is used to man to man marking. I often wonder how he manages to hold his temper. It must be obvious to him that is one of the reasons why our defence leaks goals. There is nothing like good old man to man marking to ensure that the opposition do not have a change to shoot on goal.
We also heard from Rafa today that young Daniel Agger is now back in full training and will hopefully be taking part in the matches soon. This again is more competition for Jamie and my worry is that he will soon become a bit part player, something which he said in his biography, he did not want to be.
I honestly hope that this does not happen, Jamie is a man that can step up to the occasion and I believe will continue to be asset to the Liverpool team. What you have to remember is that Jamie gave up his England career so that he could continue to give his all to Liverpool. What also tells you something about his fitness is that it is rumoured that Capello is thinking about contacting him for a recall to the England Squad. Would the national coach do that, if he was failing for his club, I don't think so.
To all those doubters out there, I say please be patient, a couple of bad games does not mean he is finished. I am sure that the old Jamie will shine through soon.

"Skrtel has a habit of barging into the play, without first looking to see if Jamie is going for the ball, hence the accident a few weeks ago. The result, Jamie had a cut head and Skrtel a fractured jaw."
Carragher was entirely to blame for that.. Skrtel called it Carra looked at him and still went for the ball.
Cara has had 5 years now to get used to zone marking. Not an excuse I am afraid...
Magnumopus sometimes when a system becomes ingrained in you, it is very hard to adjust tolsomething new. Jamie was used to the old and better way of man to man marking, which is why he is still has a problem with zonal marking.
Impz maybe Jamie was to blame for that particular incident, but that does not alter the fact that Skrtel can be a little too quick with his decisions. I do honestly believe that he needs to calm down and think a little more.
I love commens like "There is nothing like good old man to man marking to ensure that the opposition do not have a change to shoot on goal." - so please explain to me how we scored from a corner against man to man marking from west ham? And I also assume that the other 19 teams in the premier league NEVER conced from a corner - nonsense!! In 4 years REina has won golden glove 3 times and only missed out by one game last year - zonal marking is truly awful.
Carra is not winning balls in the air, is vunerable to the quick runners, that said Agger spend a lot of time injured and we dont have an obvious replacement.
The defence and Masch have to improve a sa unit and quickly because if we dont we will get take aprt in the big games. I dread conceding a corner and like the champions league game at Anfiels agaoinst Chelsea we can lose a tie on thes mistakes.
It is hard to believe that after last year we have not improved when it comes to set pieces. They all have to take collective responsibiltyas well as Raf and teh staff and get this sorted, because everybody knows our weakness at the back and balls will be pumped in. I was at Wet Ham on Saturday and both Carra and Skrtel couldnt deal with Cole, so with Drogba to come it needs to be sorted and quick.
red and proud - Hi I totally agree with your opening points, as I said in the article, Jamie does seem out of sorts at the moment but that happens to the best of us. I expect him to fully recover and I am sure that we will see the old Jamie soon. Again I agree, we don't have an obvious replacement which is why players such as Daniel Agger, have got to get fit and stay fit so that they can fight for their place, hopefully at the same time making a massive improvement to their so if the worst happened and Jamie was sidelined then the team would not have a massive problem.
The defense which includes Masherano has definitely got to improve, they are at the moment as you say making far too many mistakes, our corner defending and set pieces are diabolical and I hope are gone over day after day at Melwood. You are right in saying that they do have to take a collective responsibility for this, why this message is not getting across I don't know but it needs too and quickly. I was not at Upton Park on Saturday but watched the game on TV, and I will admit I cringed every time Cole got into the area. Hopefully by the time we play Chelsea the problem will have been dealt with (we can dream I guess). At the moment whether Drogba plays or not is with the Chelsea doctors - I secretly hope is he is not fit but then this is Chelsea
