No new signings for Liverpool & once again the two American owners prove their lack of commitment
Rafa Benitez was told several weeks ago by the American owners that there was no more money to spend on new players before the transfer window closed on Tuesday. However, I watched the live transfer updates intently as the clock ticked down to the 5 p.m. deadline hoping that it was just a clever ploy to throw other clubs off the scent and that there would indeed be a last minute major signing. Sadly, it was not to be. I really should have known better.
To his credit, Benitez is publicly stating he believes he has the players needed to challenge for the title. But does he really believe this to be true? I doubt it. The current survey on 'Liverpool Banter' asks the question "Is Liverpool's squad strong enough for a title push?" Of the 434 responses, the count at the time of writing, 290 (67%) said "No". When you look at the subs on the bench against Aston Villa for example (Cavalieri, Kelly, Dossena, Ayala, Riera, Voronin & Babel) this concern is totally justified.
An article in the Liverpool Echo on August 22nd clearly showed how Rafa has been short-changed by the ownership. He was promised £20 million to spend on summer signings in order to strengthen the squad. He sold Alonso & Arbeloa and few others for around £38m, which should have given him a transfer pool of £58m. According to the article, the acquisition of Aquilani & Johnson only required an initial payment to Roma of 5 million euros and £7m to Portsmouth, as they still owed us money for Crouch. Clearly the numbers just don't add up. Brilliant management Tom & George, just brilliant.
I feel sick for Rafa. How does he manage to keep motivated when he has to work under such inept ownership, false promises and a clear lack of the financial support needed to create a first class team. We can only hope these two American's decide to retire to the ranch sooner than later and disappear into the sunset forever.

Another summer of false hope passes with us just dabbling our toe's in the transfer "pool".Rafe must be tearing his hair out at the lack of funds being made available, but we should ask ourselves is he partly to blame for our lack luster approach, look at the bench from the Villa game 2 high value signings made by Rafa (£20mill) and neither of them get regular games and when they do get starts they dont exactly cover them selves in glory. The point is maybe less quantity and more quality in our buys may convince our 2owners to fund a few bigger and better profile buys to kick us on
