MONDAY night's impressive demolition of Portsmouth at Anfield was the ideal start to a crucial week for Liverpool.
It was so pleasing to see us play the kind of attacking football that has been lacking in recent months.
It's easy to dismiss it as being 'only' Portsmouth, but they are FA Cup semi-finalists and can be dangerous on their day as we discovered at Fratton Park back in December.

LIVERPOOL managed a feat on Monday that many would have thought impossible - they lost twice on the same night.
If it was not bad enough seeing Wigan Athletic take three precious points, the defeat at the DW Stadium effectively saw us relinquish pole position in the race for the Champions League; things, from this moment, are going to be exceptionally hard.

BETTER football last year, better at grinding out result this year - Liverpool's win over Blackburn was not for the purists but its importance should not be dismissed.
It was hard work but when you come up against a side like Blackburn, the first thing that you must do is fight and it was really encouraging to see Liverpool roll their sleeves up and battle.
With Tottenham and Manchester City winning, we had no other option but to do likewise to keep ourselves in the running for fourth place; our two main rivals are refusing to go away and the remainder of the season is going centre on which team can hold their nerve.

BIG tests are coming thick and fast but the demands are bringing the best out of Liverpool - can the same be said about Arsenal?
It would be wrong to get carried away on the back of a comfortable win in the Merseyside derby extended our unbeaten run to seven but, suddenly, there is a slight chance that third place - never mind fourth - is up for grabs again.
Much, of course, depends on the outcome of tomorrow night's tussle at the Emirates Stadium and, despite losing to Manchester United and Chelsea in their last two games, Arsenal will start favourites.

THERE has been so much speculation over the past week, but I can't see Rafa Benitez quitting Liverpool to take over at Juventus.
To be honest, it just wouldn't make any sense. Juventus is a club close to my heart and as far as I'm concerned they are the best club in Italy.
But if Benitez left to go there he wouldn't be going to a better club or one with more money to spend on signings.
