Decisions made in the next few weeks will determine the future of this football club.
When Gillett and Hicks arrived it seemed that all the right moves would be made to position the club to compete at the top level for years to come. The new stadium was seen as key to that future. With a new modern stadium in place Liverpool could possibly even double the current match day revenues when the extra corporate facilities were factored in.
As was made only too clear yesterday with the resignation of Martin O'Neill from Villa, we understand over a row with Villa's owner over finances, money is the name of the game if a club wants to be able to compete.

You would be forgiven if the current takeover news surrounding Anfield left you somewhat punch-drunk, jaded and apathetic.
Haven't we seen all of this before? Promises by our two "Stewards" that they would sell the club, only for nothing to happen?
Except maybe seeing nothing being spent on players and the club haemorrhaging money every second of every day.

Quite apt that the date was April 1st as the sheer farce of last night's game seemed appropriate for the day.
Liverfools? Yeah. Foolish for expecting an even-handed and fair refereeing performance. Foolish that we allowed the game to continue in the second half when Pepe Reina's goal was under a constant bombardment of fireworks and coins from the Bentfica "supporters".
The 65th official - or whatever he was - that clown who bowed to the pressure and gave both penalties - drew the referee's (referee - now there's a laugh if ever there was one) to the bombardment. Don't think the missiles were aimed at him though do you?
The defeat last night against Mighty Wigan finally quashed the last bit of hope I had of us getting something out of this campaign.
Another listless performance from a side that may well have had one eye on the away game at Lille this Thursday but dropping three points makes life a lot easier for our rivals for fourth place.
Man City and Aston Villa in particular who now have games galore in hand and gives them both plenty of margin for error.

Disappointing defeat at the Emirates during the week. Maybe it was deserved as we didn't show much going forward but a point down there would have satisfied most Liverpool fans.
As it was, the real winners on the night were Arsenal themselves as Chelsea lost and United drew so the three points they gained kept them in the title race.
As for us in our race for fourth place, only time will tell what the effect of Howard Webb's denial of a potential late penalty for Cesc Fabregas' hand ball will have.
Below, just for a bit of fun, is how I think a meeting over the issue between Howard Webb and Keith Hackett, the general manager of the Professional Game Match Official Board might have gone.
