The Ignorance That Still Surrounds The Hillsborough Disaster

By Faith Fulcher on Dec 8, 10 12:38 PM in Fans

Late yesterday afternoon an article written by a so called journalist appeared on the Boston Globe website stating that the Hillsborough Disaster was in fact a riot and he could not understand why Liverpudlians were still making a fuss about it twenty one years later. He also castigated the city and the people of Liverpool in what was supposed to be a direct attack aimed at John Henry.

His name is Alex Beam and to be honest he is not a journalist but a hack who has no idea about the words he has written.

THIS IS THE OFFENSIVE PARAGRAPH

The few sane people I have talked to about Liverpool understand that these are early days for New England Sports Ventures and that meaningful changes probably won't come until Liverpool's season ends in May. None of those sane people are in Liverpool, however. Even by the deranged standards of European soccer, Red fans are totally bonkers. Their excitable internet fan sites are still agonizing over a 21 year old soccer stadium disaster that killed 96 people (The original version of this story mischaracterized the event as a riot.) One website, This is Anfield.com is publishing yet another exhaustive history of the incident, and still actively promotes a boycott of Rupert Murdoch's Tabloid (I won't print the name), two decades after the paper accused Liverpool fans of pickpocketing the corpses and other outrages.

He also insulted the City of Liverpool by saying that it was grotty.

I along with many other people set several things in motion and very quickly the 'internet terrorists' began their work. Emails and letters were written and sent quickly across the Atlantic, not only to the email address printed at the bottom of the article ([email protected] - please feel free to send your own feelings, but be polite). I got in touch with the London media, placed the link onto the Red and White Kop forum, whilst other people started to spread the word through twitter and facebook, contacting people such as Kenny Dalglish and John Aldridge. The phone lines of the paper were quickly block with callers from both the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world with people letting the paper know how disgusted they were.

To give the Boston Globe credit, when they realised that a major error had been made, they issued this correction.

Because of a reporting error. Alex Beam's column on Tuesday in the 'g' section mischaracterized the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster involving Liverpool soccer fans as a "riot". The official investigation into the disaster, which cost 96 lives, placed the blame primarily on poor crowd control and inadequate stadium design.

I know in a lot of the emails links about the disaster were included so that the hack and other members of the Boston globe staff could perhaps learn why their IGNORANCE has angered and upset so many people.

The Boston Globe is I understand part of the New York Times Group, which is owned by one of the gentleman in the consortium that helped John Henry in his purchase of Liverpool football club, so I hope meetings are going to be set up and a lot of strong words said.

As a relative of one of the victims of the disaster what I personally want to see is a proper apology from the hack himself to the families of the bereaved as he no right to say such a hurtful and untruthful thing. I would also like to see him sacked - which is something that was brought up last night, but I suspect that will never happen.
