KICK OUT ROY, Purslow's boy, and bring back our best ideas from our glorious past

By Brendan Leary on Jan 7, 11 02:40 AM in Columnists

Roy Hodgson is the choice of Christian Purslow, Martin Broughton, Hicks and Gillett. He's not the Kop's man, never was, and it never should have thought he would be.

So why is he still here?

Fenway Sports Group need to consign the Hodgson mistake to our immediate murky past immediately. In his place, they should take a key idea from our glorious past.

The Boot Room.

I don't mean the physical space. I mean what occurred in there.

A number of wise heads contesting and sharing ideas. You need to bounce ideas around about how to advance LFC and best our opponents.

LFC needs to knock its ideas into their best shape before we act on them.

I was and remain a Rafa man. I'd have him back in second, as he deserves a chance to work towards long term goals and while properly resourced.

Unfortunately, under previous ownership, Rafa always had to give up good resources to try acquire better ones, and take a short term view by shopping in seconds bins to try preserve Champions League revenues in order to maintain some sort of transfer budget.

But Rafa never was perfect, and nor were his decisions. He made mistakes, across transfers, politics, the media, and so on. Just as all managers do.

He really needed more wise heads about the place who he could talk to, people he had to listen to, who he or anyone would respect.

This would have been especially valuable when the Boardroom, and perhaps others, started their disastrous campaign against him.

Back to our present ineptitude.

My greatest concern is that FSG haven't heeded or acted on what should have been evident months ago. Hodgson must be removed ASAP. He can't understand the responsibilities, let alone handle them.

I agree a permanent replacement shouldn't be rushed into. But it seems equally clear an interim appointment should at least stall our plummet. It should not have taken FSG so long to move towards making an interim appointment.

My second greatest concern is FSG seem intent on making Comolli the main man at Liverpool. Suggestions we need a young manager implies a logic that is political, not pragmatic.

Why should we shy away from managers with well-established reputations? The only logical reason is they would be less beholden to Comolli for their advancement and appointment, and have less standing of their own to draw on.

I don't have a problem with Comolli. I think if he pursues a 'Moneyball' line of thinking, that could be of tremendous value to the club. And director of football can be a valuable check on a manager's ideas.

But Comolli's record is mixed. And there's not a lot of evidence that he really gets The Liverpool Way.

We need some strong internal voices at the club to check his ideas, much as he is a check on the manager. And with the exception of the incumbent, the manager should always be the main man at Liverpool.

We need an internal structure at LFC where we have a number of strong people with strong ideas, but no one person is overwhelmingly dominant.

The Boot Room is the idea that joins these ideas together.

What Liverpool really need now is a bit of time, and a number of strong wise heads to check on one another and put some discipline on one another's ideas.

FSG need to bring back a Boot Room of strong personalities and strong ideas who can work together towards building a better club over the long term.

Appoint a joint interim managerial team, give it at least the next six months, and let the Boot Room approach let you lead it from there. You may not need to introduce another manager.

Joint managers didn't work under Evans and Houllier, but that was about shifting someone out delicately. This is about managing the right ideas and people in.

In the ideal world, who would take their places in the new Boot Room?

I know what I'd have.

Benitez-Dalglish as joint managers, with Phil Thompson and Comolli taking the other corners.

Some might claim Kenny has been out of the game too long. Others might say Rafa is overly tactical in his approach to some domestic league fixtures.

But the only criticism you could level at the combination of the two is: how well could they work together?

For those who suspect too much power rests with current players: how could they stand against a triumvirate of Kenny, Rafa and Thommo?

For those worried by Comolli's influence, what better check than those three?

For those believing a returning Rafa would need greater scrutiny of his transfers, who better than Comolli?

Join the dots, FSG. It need not be the men I identifed, but you know the basic structure make sense.

I think everybody needs to calm down here. Roy has to go that's for sure but without the right man to appoint it's not point sacking him. Appointing Dalglish is one solution that FSG have to decide but soon. FSG inherited all these problems and they are actually trying to appoint the right CEO first but their arms are twisted to force a coach appointment.

Let's be honest here, who, in world class caliber and right frame of mind, would want to take on this job? Every world class coach is staying away from Liverpool because of this problem.

Sacking Roy now/immediately w/o a replacement is an emotional choice. I am 100% FSG won't spend 300m to see LFC relegated - never - ever! The fact they are quiet seems to suggest something is behind the scenes.

We need to get behind the team. No individual is more important than the club.

PS FSG: There are only two ways about this. Sack Roy or Back Roy (with $$$), please!!!! Doing nothing is the worst than sacking.

Jeez, I don't know what planet you're on but you're living in a dream world. The 'Boot Room'? It is in the past, it worked for it's time, but do you honestly think that a manager doesn't consult with the rest of his staff? That is what the 'Boot Room' was after all. It has just got this mythical aura because we were successful for quite a long time.
If one manager could be said to have not taken any notice of his staff than it could be levelled at Benitez. He wanted total power at Liverpool, and very nearly got it. Do you think he would return to as a management duo? I don't. Not that I think he should return anyway. His time as past, I enjoyed the good times, but I can't actually say I enjoyed a lot of the football under his management. The same with Hodgson, but at least Benitez got the time to do the job, Hodgson it seems may not.
Commoli is there to search for talant, the manager, whomever that may be has final say, but he is there to try and maximise the money that will be spent, and to have a continuity through management changes.

Dalglish has urged fans to back the manager, so why would he take his place. He may step into the breach should Hodgson be axed, for the good of the club, but he would want to to be there for the long haul rather as a caretaker till the end of the season. If you know you are only there for a set time, you can't make any meaningful changes. A caretaker manager should be for weeks, not months.
I think we should stick with Hodgson at least till the end of the season. It is the players who need a kick up the a*se. Internationals, really? The witch hunt for Hodgson has taken all accountability off them for there poor performances. They are the ones on the field after all.
