A Perfect Day in Liverpool 4
I
had a funny feeling last night, that Thursday the 12th May 2011 was going to
turn into a strange day. My daughter had been due to fly back from Dallas but
due to the tornadoes, she went out to chase, her flight back was delayed that
many times I had a sleepless night. I
had also heard rumblings that something was afoot regarding Kenny and Liverpool
Football Club.
This
of course played on my mind and with it still bugging me this morning, I
decided that I needed to get the weekly shop done and then concentrate on my
beloved club. I think the Kenny effect
must have kicked in then because it was done in record time and I returned home
to find twitter and Facebook full of rumours about when the King would be
crowned.
There
was also a note on the LFCTV website giving the time of the Tottenham pre-match
press conference. Being an avid follower
of these, I thought it was rather strange to have it today rather than
tomorrow, stranger things were to happen though. I went online and brought up the LFCTV Live
events page - it was showing a run through of the season's goals. This finished
and then a programme about Andy Carroll started, so I went back onto
twitter. After bringing my tweets up to
date, there was one from Ben Smith of the Times, which read the immortal words
"Kenny Dalglish has been awarded a three year contract"
My
next reaction of course was to go onto the LFCTV website and there it was, a
full length statement announcing his appointment. A scream followed and seconds
later the tears of joy began to fall down my face. Suddenly what had been billed as a normal
press conference, turned into Kenny's introduction as our permanent manager? It had also been switched to being live on
television rather than being just a computer feed. I quickly emailed a couple of the journalists
who I knew would be there, because I was unaware as to whether they had been
informed or not - they hadn't and were just as shocked as the rest of us.
With
Kenny were Ian Ayre and Damien Comolli, who took turns to speak. Ian being the
new CEO, of course did the brunt of the talking on behalf of himself as well as
John and Tom. Damien said what he had to
say about the playing staff and how well all the players had responded to Kenny
and Steve Clark's method.
Then
of course we heard from the great man himself.
Kenny was of course as humble as he always is and said that his contract
was testament to the fact that everyone, including us the supporters pulled
together. Liverpool Football Club was a
solid once again, and the improvement is there for everyone to see.
Although
Steve Clarke was not there, it was also announced that he had also been awarded
a three year contract. This of course is
also well deserved. He has turned things
around on the training pitch, getting rid of the silly children toys and
reintroducing ball work, which of course we can all see the benefit off. He also shortened the training sessions, from
being two and half to three hours of repetitive boredom, they are now down to
around an hour and half, which enables the team to go home and have a good
rest.
There
were also several questions raised about what was happening with Anfield. Ian
Ayre said that the situation was still being looked at and we would be told
when a decision has been made. The only
comment I will make on this is, the planning permission for Stanley Park runs
out on the 12th June 2011 and nothing else as yet has been submitted to
Liverpool City Council's planning department. I sincerely hope that I am right
is saying that a dialogue is going on between both parties to resolve the
issue.
Then
the press conference was switched into the usual pre match mode and as always
Vinny of Sky Sports News gets ready to ask the first question. This time though, the King himself got in
first and said to Vinny, "Now what are you going to ask me, as your
regular question has been answer".
Vinny being Vinny hesitated for a moment and then began to ask about the
players and their fitness, so Kenny just ran through the list of injuries as he
always does. Other reporters in the room
then began to fire their own questions at Kenny and as per usual several bouts
of laughter were heard, along with the answers.
It then finished with Kenny asking for cameras be switched off, as he
again began to talk to Vinny. How I
would love to know what was said. There
is definitely no love lost between the pair of them.
It
then ended and of course Twitter and Facebook along with the major players in
the media were going wild with information and comments from Supporters. Everyone in the world, who has the Liverbird
in their heart, is ecstatic because the confirmation means that our King has
now been returned to his rightful throne.
He now has the authority to carry on the work of Shanks and Bob, whose
spirits I am sure have been guiding him since January and will continue to do
so.
The
media of course have had a field day and the column inches that only the King
can fill have been massive this afternoon, so I am hoping that the paper editions
tomorrow morning will be collector's items.
If so, then a lot of money is going to be spent to ensure that my
grandchildren know what a fantastic man, they have in charge of their football
club.
The
man who will restore Liverpool Football Club to what it once was and who will
bring the Premiership title finally home to where it belongs, as well as all
the honours that we can and I am sure will gather up, as his second coming
gathers pace. That man of course is our
manager KENNETH MATHESON DALGLISH.
One
thing that crossed my mind though in all the hysteria that has followed his appointment
was that I wondered how Sir Alex would be feeling on hearing the news. I can just imagine the scene. He sits down after lunch a large bottle of
Glenfiddich by his side with an empty glass. His plan was to just have one
after dinner drink - two hours later, he is sitting there in shock, the bottle
and glass now empty. The enemy who he
thought would disappear as quickly as he reappeared had been told he was
staying. Sir Alex now knows that the
Liverbird is determined to claim his perch back from the pretenders to the
throne and he not looking forward to the fight.
It
is of course going to be an interesting fight all because on the 12th May 2011,
it became a perfect day in Liverpool 4.
