Why Liverpool Supporters Need to Have Respect and Not Hatred Towards Their Fellow Supporters
Late yesterday evening I witnessed what I thought would
never happen. Liverpool supporters were
saying the most awful things about the Manager and the club who barring one
point have won their 19th Premiership title.
Now this particular club happens to be Manchester United and their
manager is Sir Alex Ferguson who by the virtue of fate has made their own mark
on the football history of this country.
This morning, I had hoped that having slept on the matter,
our supporters would have calmed down and realised that it is part and parcel
of a footballer supporter's life.
Unfortunately, especially amongst the younger supporter's the vitriol
and the spite is as bad as ever and in its own way it puts the club into a
situation that should not be there. I am
from the generation that watched the club arise from the ashes as Bill Shankly
worked his magic and I suspect we have a lot more patience than most. We know things never run smoothly and every
now and again there are hurdles to overcome, some of which are major ones. Losing the title and winning it back is one
of those and I suspect the wheels of time are about to turn in our favour.
Firstly though, you have to look back not only through our past but through Sir
Alex Ferguson's as well.
Our past started of course from our humble beginnings in
1892 when the club was formed after John Houlding decided that he could not
work with the current directors of his then club Everton FC. A lot of the players followed and very soon
Liverpool FC was born. The one thing
that John did was to instil the winning mentality into everyone connected with
the club and to this day it remains, although due to several mistakes, it
unintentionally went missing for quite some time.
The club of course began to prosper immediately because of
this and as football became more popular, it began its metriotic climb through
the divisions as they were formed. The
club arrived in the old first division where it continued to make strides until
they won the League. Unfortunately, as
often happens fate stepped in and we were suddenly faced with a decade of
decline after being relegated to the second division. It was not helped by the
fact that many of the Liverpool's great players were replaced by lesser ones -
a story which I am sure is very familiar with the supporters of today.
The 1950's were almost over when manager, Phil Taylor decided he could not get the club back to where they should be and the seeds were sown for the beginning of Liverpool's domination of the First Division. A certain Scotsman by the name of William Shankly had been plying his managerial trade through clubs such as Huddersfield and was brought to the attention of chairman T. V. Williams. Bill Shankly became the Liverpool manager in December 1959 and from that moment the club never looked back.
He was the man of course who brought the club and its supporters together as one. So much so, that we are still referred as being part of a big family. He also made sure that his players knew they had to win and win for the people that supported them and they did. They made us the proudest supporters in the land by winning eighteen league titles as well as FA and European Cups.
Bill of course as we know retired in 1974 but having trained his staff well, it was decided to promote through the ranks and Bob Paisley took over and became part of the great title haul. He continued the work in progress until another stalwart of the boot room took over in 1983. His name of course was Joe Fagan, who was on verge of greatness until tragedy took over. In 1985 the Heysel disaster left him a broken man and it was decided that Kenny Dalglish would become player manager, thus keeping things within the Liverpool Family. Kenny continued this and also became a hero due to his compassion and work after the Hillsborough Disaster. Again though due to the stress of this, he decided he needed to walk away from the game.
THIS IS THE POINT AT WHERE I believe the wheels of fate turned against us. The then Liverpool board believing they were doing the right thing, appointed Graeme Souness as the clubs next manager. Unfortunately having worked in Europe he brought some, what were seen at the time as new -fangled ideas into the club and tried to rush them through very quickly. This did not work and along with buying several players that were simply not of the standard that Liverpool required, the dynasty began to collapse. Our football suffered and our hold on the league title began to slip just as the new Premier League was being developed and put into place. This was as we know a hold that unbeknown to us at the time would be taken out of our reach by another young Scot who was learning his managerial trade in Scotland.
This young man was called Alex Ferguson, who had noticed what his fellow Scot, Bill Shankly was doing at Liverpool. He took note and decided to follow his example. I am not saying he followed his every move or indeed spied on him - the book If you Are Second, You are Nothing by Oliver Holt explains his journey, but twenty five years ago, when he was offered the job at Manchester United, what he had learnt was immediately put into place and the fruits of his labour are there for everyone to see.
From being a manager threated with the sack after seven years of getting nothing, he stuck by his methods and his word and Manchester united are a force to be reckoned with - or other they because the wheels of time have now come full circle.
After Graeme Souness and Roy Evans it was decided that a joint managerial posting of Roy Evans and Gerard Houiller, Liverpool decided to follow the trend of employing a foreign manager. Gerard Houiller became Liverpool's full time manager and during his time we won the treble - it looked as though we were on the up once more. The gremlin called ill health then struck again and after being taken ill and coming back too soon, Gerard was replaced by Rafa Benitez. Rafa did everything he could, but faced a new enemy. We had been sold to a pair of vultures and he was fighting in the board room as well as trying to train on the pitch. His work on the pitch seemed to be paying dividends when the Premiership title appeared to be in our grasp but lack of funds and players who had lost the will to play properly sent the team spiralling backwards rather than make the leap everyone felt they would.
Another pivotal point had been reached in the life of Liverpool Football Club when it had become known the club was in serious trouble and needed to be sold to ensure its survival. To ensure this happened smoothly Rafa, who because of his outspoken remarks needed to be replaced by someone who the then management could trust. This turned out to be Roy Hodgson who very quickly proved that he was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time.
With the supporters clamouring for the one man who could bring harmony once more to the club, its new owner, John Henry decided to act in January and Kenneth Matheson Dalglish was returned to his rightful throne. Now Kenny learnt his trade under Shanks, Bob and Joe and immediately our results began to improve and we are now in a position to let the football world know that we are going to return the title back to its rightful home in the fullness of time.
Before this happens though, we have to grit our teeth and smile at our competitors who because they have a manager, who followed the teachings of a certain Bill Shankly, have won their nineteenth title. Let them enjoy it, because as I have said many times throughout this blog, the wheels of time have now turned full circle. We have the right man, now back on this throne, albeit temporarily until he puts pen to paper, we have a team that now plays as one and know what they need to do. Whereas although Sir Alex has said he will continue, one day he will retire and I suspect when it happens and Manchester United lose his mentality, no matter who the new manager is, the team will fall apart. I also suspect there will be major money problems in the future and the players brought will be substandard. We have been there and come out the other side, the Liverbird is restless and wants to return to his perch, and believe me he will.

Whilst I begrudge Man U's success, the blame for LFC's failure to keep pace lies solely with the Club - directors, managers, coaches, supporters. We can criticise ourselves, but not other clubs who have filled the vacuum left by Liverpool.
We've had a fantastic past, and will have as good a future. Feel happy about that
Faith what world are you living in we hate every thing about manure I for one would not show them any good will I hate them with a passionI hate there manager there club and most of all there supporters have you not seen what they were selling t shirts about hillsborough are you real woman if bin ladens mob are going to seek revenge I hope its at the mancs ground when its full of them and there manager . Do I sound bitter Faith well I am and you and every other liverpool supporter should be to this is about football this is about the city of Liverpool and manchester and what ever they have won 9 times out of 10 they have cheated to get it if you look at there badge Faith it tells you what they are DEVILS I dont do the devil you may do Faith but I dont and I dont need you telling me and other manc haters that we should not hate them why dont you go and support them if you dont hate them Faith
Ive been a lfc support for 29 yrs and while i remember the good times I remember the bad. MAnu have won anI hat the fact they are winning and not my team. Credit has to be handed to them for winning. We will be back and under FSG NESV and KK ( People who know what they are doing) We will be the first to 21... I hope people appreciate that you need rivals otherwise you will be playing on your own. So well done ( Through gritted teeth) We will see you next year...
how said we hate them!
If anyone other than us who deserve to get the title and go beyound our numbers it should be Manu, but it does not mean that we will lag behind as they did for so many years!
Mark my words we will get a grasp of EPL next season. All we need is 3 more good players to fill the void!
I cant hate a people - they are human beings after all. Like every true LFC supporter I am gutted they have got to 19 before we did - however, and I dont think Im being over optimistic here, next year we will take 19 right back off them. If John Henry gets Kenny's contract signed asap and then gives him the money to buy the 3/4 players he needs to strengthen the squad then there is no reason on this earth why we wont take the premier league next May. Look what he and his team of Clark & Lee have done since Jan, totally amazing... although with my next comment I AM being over confident, but if Man C lost their next 3 games and we win our remaining 2 then we finish 4th - a nice thought but I think not going to happen. But who would have thought we could even be having those thoughts of a top 4 finish (used to be the norm!) come Christmas last year... me and the majority of LFC fans had the terrifying thought our team could be in a relagation fight - unthinkable! Luckily John Henry listened and then did the best thing he could ever do after buying the biggest and best club in the world and that is he signed the best manager/player ever and Im sorry Mancs he is, in terms of not only what has he done for LFC as a player and a manager but he did it with Blackburn as well. I will never ever feel anything but contempt for the manc rubbish down the road - you can not lecture us when they come out with their Hillsborough bile each and every game and that is even when they are not playing Liverpool. They dont even seem able to just enjoy and revel in the achievement they have just got, they have to add on the evilness with it. If you are a supporter of Football then yes you have to recognise what they have achieved and then just get on with the next game and bring on the next season. I for one keep hoping and praying that Ferguson will not retire for a few more seasons because I cant wait to see Kenny give him that glorious smile that he does as we walk away with 2 or 3 more Premiership titles over the next 3/4 seaons. I do, however, agree with regard to how Manc U will fold like the proverbial house of cards when he does go - its an given really, the money, the players just wont be the same - like you said we've been there and done that! Iv just watched Liverpool run riot at Fulham and there truly seems to be no stopping us. We are the greatest football team ever, let the mancs have their spot for a few months - come August them and a lot of other people are going to be very surprised at what Liverpool FC throws at the league next season. All those doubters who think it will be another 2/3 seaons before we win the title or play in Champions League, you will be proved wrong. What has been achieved in the space of 5 months is truly amazing, just wait and see what the Man and his team do in just one season! YNWA JF96
To the poster who tries to justify his hatred of Manchester United: typically any rational comment on the futility of your lack of self-awareness is met by accusations of treachery by the person who's pointing it out - in this case Faith Fulcher. Such as you do not have a monopoly on what being a fan of LFC means, you nitwit.
Do you think Dalglish hates Ferguson? Well, do you? They're rivals at England's two biggest clubs, of course they are, but they're fellow Glaswegians who have a mighty mutual respect.
Outside of this rivalry they're FRIENDS of long-standing. Ferguson used to give Dalglish a lift to training when the latter had signed for Celtic back when.
Faith Fulcher represents the traditional kind of rivalry between the clubs, from the days when English football respected itself beyond tribal affiliation.
If Dalglish was put on the spot he would condemn your ilk; as would Ferguson in regard to the infantile minority who follow United, who burgeon with the same kind of hatred you display.
NO manager worth his salt would kowtow to the principleless, un-grown-up attitude to not just football but probably life itself, the likes of you can't get through the day, any day, without.
Thank God the majority of LFC supporters, with their hot rivalry, yep, but their innate decency know this. You won't change that, fella.
Take your bile elsewhere.
RedSquirrel: I admire your optimism, matey, but you ARE being over-optimistic.
Realism dictates that Dalglish will need at least one more season after this one to fashion a squad/first team capable of genuinely challenging for the Premiership trophy.
City will spend more (over time I can see them, rightly or wrongly, becoming THE most disliked club in Prem history) and so will Chelsea.
And United, like it or not, will sign a creative midfielder at least. Don't be surprised to see Sneijder arrive at OT in the summer.
Give Dalglish more time than you seem to think he needs. Cheers.
