Time to bring reserves back to play in Liverpool

GARY ABLETT compared promising Hungarian youngster Krisztian Nemeth to Kenny Dalglish this week.

Liverpool's reserve team boss didn't say the 19-year-old will be as good as the man still revered as "King Kenny" on the Kop, but he did argue that the way Nemeth sticks his backside into opposition defenders before twisting and turning away from them brought back memories of Dalglish.

The comparison is an apt one because Nemeth can undoubtedly boast that particular talent in his wide repertoire of skills.

Unfortunately, though, there are only a limited number of Liverpool fans who have been able to watch Nemeth's development as a footballer since he moved to the club last summer.

Like Emiliano Insua and Damien Plessis, Nemeth clearly has the potential to challenge for a place in Liverpool's first team in the years to come and he is the most exciting attacking talent to emerge from the reserves since Michael Owen used the second string as a stepping stone to the big league in the mid-1990s.

But had it not been for his appearance in the national reserve league play-off final against Aston Villa at Anfield, Nemeth would be still to play in Liverpool.

That's because the club continues to hold its reserve team home games anywhere but the city where they are based and from where they take their name and their identity.

Warrington Wolves hosted the reserves last season and when the rugby league ground was not available they played at Wrexham.

Both Warrington and the Wrexham did themselves proud and did not let anyone down but surely Liverpool reserves should play in Liverpool.

Getting to Cheshire or north Wales on a midweek night isn't easy so that means native Liverpudlians are being deprived of the opportunity to see emerging talent in action for the reserves.

At a time when prices for Premier League tickets have again gone up - Liverpool's season ticket prices have risen by an inflation busting 7% - surely hosting reserve team games at Anfield with entrance fees at an affordable level would give families who can't afford to go to see the first team an opportunity to see players from the club they support in regular action.

And then they would be in a position to make similar comparisons to the one Gary Ablett made about Nemeth and Dalglish earlier this week.

Getting to Warrington is extremely easy taking 20 minutes by road or train. Any Liverpudlian who wants to watch them there has no excuse beyond pure laziness.

So by the same token you wouldn’t mind if the first team played its home games at Old Trafford 35mins by Road or Rail

No thought not

The reserves should play at Anfield in front of Home fans it is as simple as that
No ifs no butts no maybes
That would allow the players to be able to get used to playing at Anfield and allow the lads without cars or jobs some of them to get to Anfield to watch a Liverpool team play

if you lose this fan base even for 1 generation then you could lose 100,000s of future fans when these kids have families and they don’t go the match with Dad to catch the football bug to sit there and put that down to being lazy is not a clever thing to do and is very short sighted

Rafa needs to start giving the youngsters a fair chance, insua should be are back up left back, plessis in my opinion is better than lucas so he should be our back up centre midfielder, and nemeth and lindfield should be given the odd chance to shine, all youngsters should be played in carling cup games.
