Pre Season 2010

Yesterday saw the door close on what was the shortest pre-season that Liverpool Football Club has experienced for some time. This of course is due to our early entrance into the Europa cup, which begins on Thursday 29th July 2010 again the little known team of FK Rabotnicki.
It was also a pre -season where the team fielded consisted mainly of players that had yet to make the step up from the academy. It also proved to be time when Milan Jovanovic made his debut for the club. With many of our star players just returning to Melwood, after their annual holidays, Roy was advised by the new Sports Doctor, that it would not be ideal for him to throw them into the mix immediately, this also I understand applies to the game on Thursday.
The series of three games started off badly, when the bad luck that has followed Liverpool around for the last 12 months, appeared to rear its ugly head again. It appeared the weather that was causing chaos in the North West had decided to follow them to Austria. The team travelled from their training base in Switzerland across the border to Austria for what would have been their first game under Roy Hodgson but were met with a monsoon and after several pitch inspections, the game was called off.
The second and third games were against Grasshoppers in Austria and Kaiserslautern in Germany. Both of these games showed how inexperienced some of the youngsters were when it came facing established teams, although they played their hearts out.
On the other hand, what it did show was, that players such as Stephen Darby and Jay Spearing were certainly ready for a place in the first team and from an interview that Roy gave this morning; they would most certainly be making that step up.
Yesterday was the first time that we had the opportunity to see Milan Jovanavic and I believe that once he has settled down, we will have a player whose presence will be a great benefit to the team.
Now though, with the team heading back to England, the main work of the season starts with our early entry into the Europa Cup rounds. I just hope that the lads are ready for the challenge ahead of them and along with our established players such as Stevie G and Dirk Kuyt are looking forward to the resurgence of Liverpool Football Club.

Actually it showed us that Darby and Spearing are NOT ready for the step up.
Ayala, Gulacsi and Amoo acquitted themselves well - the rest still have a lot to prove
