A Simmering Row is Beginning to Develop Around the Stadium Development

By Faith Fulcher on Aug 20, 11 05:03 PM in Fans

I have written several times about whether or not the club should build a new stadium or whether indeed Anfield should be redeveloped. I knew that the government would interfere at some point but what I did not know was that they would use it as an excuse to take the heat away from a decision they are trying to overturn. That decision of course is the release of the Hillsborough Disclosure Documents - a subject which I will cover in another article.

It was also done overnight so most of awoke this morning to find newspaper articles stating that the Governments Housing Minister Grant Shapps has written to Ian Ayre about the stadium.  His claim is that it is causing major problems for the residents of the Anfield area.  What of course he doesn't mention is that it is the government causing those problems.

Until the Tories came into power in 2010 there was a government programme called the Housing Market Renewal Initiative.  Liverpool City Council had applied for and won funding through this so that several areas of the city could be re-developed and Anfield was one of those.  Everything was moving along as it should have been and then as the Tories have a habit of doing, the funding was withdrawn and the regeneration plans for the moment have been put aside.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with Liverpool Football Club who are I get the feeling are still no closer to making a decision than they were a month ago.  Indeed Ian Ayre came out and said exactly the same thing this morning. The club are quite rightly taking their time to ensure that the right decision is made and within that decision will be what benefit it will bring to the local community.

Yes there will be some changes to the infrastructure of the immediate area which the club will indeed pay for, but they will not be liable for any of the costs that will be incurred if any of the vacant houses are eventually done up and re-let or sold.

Mr Shapps needs to go away and read up on the his own departments rules, regulations and indeed funding cuts before he makes a statement about something if the truth be known, he indeed knows nothing about.

Liverpool City Council are fully aware of the stadium situation, indeed they have extended the deadline for a decision until the end of September and that may change again, if they feel that sufficient progress is being made towards the final outcome.

Until then though, I suspect we are going to have watch as a slanging match develops between all parties.
