Hillsborough and Our Continuous Quest for the Truth
As I am sure all of you are aware, over this weekend there
has been a petition that everyone is being urged to sign. This petition is asking the government to
debate whether or not the Cabinet documents should be released to the
Hillsborough families and the general public.
Several weeks ago it was announced that the BBC had finally
been granted a Freedom of Information request that they first submitted in
2009. This request was to allow
investigators to see the minutes of Cabinet meetings that Margaret Thatcher and
Douglas Hurd - the then Home Secretary held in the immediate aftermath of the
Hillsborough tragedy. Under the laws of
the Freedom of Information act the present day government had several weeks to
appeal the decision and until this week it appeared they were going to stand by
their stance of allowing the truth to finally come out.
Then the bombshell was dropped, the government announced
that they felt it was not in anyone's interest for the documents to be released
at this time. It was their belief that it would be better to let the
Hillsborough Panel continue with their work and release what they felt was
relevant once they had been read.
Now I am not a Tory and never been. I will be honest when I
say I detest everything they stand for. This week though they have reached a
new low because of their moves in trying to deny the 96 Angels and their
families the truth, which of course they are entitled to have.
There have been several reasons being banded about why this
has happened and who decided on the appeal. The answers to this are
simple. The main reason is I suspect
that Teresa May asked her department to read the files and hey presto they have
discovered something which they feel we must not know - hey presto I suspect it
is the TRUTH about how Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher agreed to a massive
police cover up to ensure that she and her officers came out of the affair
totally exonerated. The appeal would have been decided by David Cameron who
would have informed his home Secretary Teresa May to take the necessary steps.
When it became known in the media that had happened a
gentleman called Brian Irvine put a petition together on the No.10 website
urging the government to debate the issue. For this to happen, you need 100,000
signatures so the help of today's social media sites the word began to be
spread around. Twitter in particular has
become a massive part of this with stars such as Joey Barton picking up the
mantle and urging their followers to sign.
This is the link to the petition and although you have to be
a British Citizen to sign it, I urge you to do so. Please also pass onto work colleagues,
relatives, drinking pals and supporters of other football clubs. It is something that must be backed by
everyone.

The media have also realised that it needs to be brought out
into the open and most papers have published stories relating to Hillsborough
and its aftermath and I think them sincerely for that. Tony Barrett interviewed Margaret Aspinall for
the Times on Friday and it was a very moving interview.
This morning Michael Calvin of the Sunday Mirror published a
very moving piece and I urge you all to read it.

As has Paul Hayward of the Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/aug/20/hillsborough-disaster-liverpool
I urge you to read them both and if people need to be
educated about the disaster MirrorFootball have a fantastic archive of
Hillsborough material, some of which will shock people, but it needs to be
seen.
What I will say is that the truth will come out one day and
it will show how incompetent the Thatcher government actually were and how they
were unable to face the fact that major mistakes had been made. Twenty Two
years have now passed since that fateful day in April 1989 and there should be
no more attempts to sweep it under the carpet.
What David Cameron and Teresa May have appeared to have
forgotten is that the people of Liverpool will not give up in their quest for
justice and this is just another stumbling block that they will overcome.
You see we will get the justice the 96 Angels and their
families deserve to ensure that one day they will finally be able to rest in
peace.
